EDITORIAL REVIEWS | Product Description Ethernet Broadband Router |
CUSTOMER REVIEWS (Average Customer Rating: 3.5 based on 122 reviews)
| Would not recommend by J. McCarthy (Twin Cities, MN) 1 Stars November 20, 2009 I've had this router for just over a year, and finally got so fed up with its constant problems that I replaced it. I should have known from the start something was wrong when after implementing this router many sites became flaky, such as Google Maps in Satellite mode. Pages would stop updating, only to work minutes later.
At the time I suspected the computer, but then things got worse. I like to open lots of tabs in the browser. Check out the news, maybe see what deals Amazon has, weather, Facebook, etc.. A few would open, then the tabs would all time out. I'd have to refresh over and over until they finally connected.
I've been through the router flash updates, IPConfig, settings, etc... and had to resort to resetting the router every computer session, and sometimes multiple times during the session, to keep everything working. What a pain...
I know enough about computers to be slightly more than dangerous, but forever digging into network settings and experimenting is not my cup of tea. After searching on the web and learning that many, many others have had similar problems I finally gave up and purchased a Linksys router. After plugging it in and pushing the reset button on my cable modem (something that unfortunately has become a process I'm all to familiar with thanks to D-Link) everything worked fine, proving finally that my cable modem and computers are fine, it is indeed the router.
It's a mystery to me why this router progressively got worse over time. Again, it's been reset, re-flashed, etc... more times than I care to count. All I know is I wish I had spent my money on a different product since now I've basically had to purchase a solution twice. My advice is to stay away from this router.
| | So easy! by Sharon Deckman (California) 5 Stars November 15, 2009 This router is Mac compatible and worked right out of the box. There is no need to run the install disc on a Mac ... simply attached the modem cable, ethernet cables, power plug and go!
| | Tis alright by Jacob Veenker 3 Stars October 31, 2009 Alright well the setup and such, typical router set up, but once it is set up, it drops connection frequently for minutes at a time, very aggravating. Other then that, it's alright.
| | Has some quirks by satcomer (in geostationary orbit) 2 Stars October 24, 2009 Well it was easy to setup and use. However i noticed it would lose sync with the ISP overtime the DHCP time would renew. I tried everything to fix the problem but it persisted and no settings would suffice.
| | Works with my Mac Airport & Netflix Blu-ray network device. Easy setup! by Thomas Lee (Sac) 5 Stars October 18, 2009 Being a Mac guy I first read some reviews here to make sure this router would work with my Mac. Some nice kind people here posted special instructions for Mac setup so I thought I would give it a try. After getting the unit I realized that the posted instructions I saw did not mention using a Mac Airport (wireless) connection to my Mac - they detailed a wired connection. Whoops! I thought I might have a hassle on my hands. (And I made the same mistake I saw posted here. After searching for "routers" on Amazon I did not realize the previous device I order was a "switch". I called Netgear and they told me I actually needed a router, so I returned that unit to Amazon.)
Tonight after going outside to make sure the planets were in alignment I figured I would just give it a try. I used the CD and instruction sheet for a coaster for my favorite beverage then powered down my Comcast cable modem and Airport device. Then connected the cable modem internet connection to the router, followed by the Airport connection and the Blu-ray unit's connection.
Then I powered up the router, cable modem and Airport all at the same time. When I checked my Mac connection to the Internet (I never even shut down) I was connected, and I swear the connection seemed faster. Then I checked my Blu-ray unit and could connect to the Internet. I synced up my Netflix (which is why I needed the router since you have to be online on the computer and Blu-ray network device to activate streaming videos from Netflix) and it all worked perfect. I did not even have to turn off the NASCAR race on the TV. (Go 24!)
So, I am very impressed with the ease of setup and compatibility, to say the least. I will not be hooking up any more devices this weekend, so as not to anger the electronic gods. At some point I will add my printer to the router so I can print when I am using my Mac around the home and do not want to connect the printer to the USB.
I will update this review if I run into problems but I don't see how I could after such an easy setup.
Another nice thing about this unit also was that it has a $[...] mail-in rebate currently so the cost is less than $[...] but since you pay the less than $[...] cost on Amazon upfront you get free shipping.
Hope your experiences go as smooth.
