| Better than expected! by R. Shimonkevitz (Perry Park, CO) 5 Stars March 19, 2010 We moved to the Colorado foothills south of Denver and our radio reception went to H---. Tried a FM roof antenna and everything short of cable. Saw this Sony HD tuner and took a chance. It works FABULOUSLY! Plugged it in and had better FM reception than when we lived in town (ok, the burbs). We love FM radio and were disappointed at being out-of-touch. No Longer!
No, I don't work for Sony, We love the FM classical, jazz and Pop music stations in the Denver area (KVOD,KUVO & KBCO for those who must know) and this tuner gave them back to us. Highest recommendation for this product!
| | 5 Stars All the Way by Donald M. Guisinger (North Canton, OH USA) 5 Stars March 17, 2010 Wow! This tuner is great! I connected this tuner to a component stereo system in a second-floor bedroom. With the included dipole antenna placed on an internal wall just below the ceiling, I am able to receive FM HD stations from 3 nearby markets (Akron/Canton, Cleveland, and Youngstown). Many of these stations had been medium strength at best with other radios, but the sensitivity of this tuner pulls those signals out of the noise.
This tuner is also the best AM tuner / receiver I own. It can receive stations that my other radios don't hear.
If you're a radio fan, or if you just want to experience the new world of HDRadio, you need to buy this tuner!
| | Looney Tuner by Ramon 'manito (NYC) 3 Stars March 16, 2010 I bought the Sony XDRF1HD HD Radio Tuner based on several reviews. Especially one reviewer that gave it the "Electronic Product of the Year" award or something like that.
While there is nothing really inherently bad about this tuner. I also found that there was nothing really all that good either. At least for my situation. And that's where I keep making mistakes when I make purchases which involve some form of signal reception. I keep expecting all the superlatives I read about to somehow manifest themselves in my living room and take me to Xanadu. But I have found out the hard way, that here in NYC where I live, my reception is pretty good already. Not the Winegard antenna, the Motorola signal booster or this Sony tuner is going to improve my reception situation, much. I gather this tuner will be more useful for people who live out in fringe areas. Duh! I should have payed closer attention to the Amazon reviewers.
Apart from that, there are some issues with this tuner. If you unplug the tuner say adios to your station presets. Even your cat might find this small radio too hot. This thing gets hotter than my 100 WPC amplifier at full blast. Whats up with that? Twenty presets for AM? There aren't 20 AM stations in NYC! The display is bland, unattractive and hard to see. Which begs the question; Who wants to see something bland an unattractive anyway?
I'm keeping it only as a reminder to me of my poor decision making skills.
| | Wonderful sound quality and incredible sensitivity make this a winner, especially for fringe listeners! by ZTT Fan (Louisville, Colorado) 4 Stars March 13, 2010 I've been reading good things about this tuner for years as an unexpected audiophile winner and decided to give this unit a try just for its analog FM reception.
To put it mildly, this unit is incredible. I listen to a very low power station located about 40 miles away, and my high end audiophile tuner could just about pick it up and then only in blended mode. With the same antenna, this tuner picked up the station in stereo with full quieting. I couldn't believe it!
Better yet, when comparing analog reception, the soundstage was wider and more defined compared to my older tuner, though highs sounded ever so slightly rolled off.
My complaints with the unit are the same as others have had - analog AM reception is severely rolled off on the high end to the point to sounding muffled, if the power is removed for more than five minutes or so, all settings disappear, and the nice number keys on the remote can only be used to select presets, NOT to directly enter a frequency, and it does run fairly warm to the touch - well ventilated placement is highly encouraged.
Perhaps the biggest issue with this tuner is that if a station is broadcasting an HD signal, there is NO WAY to tell the unit you want to listen to the analog signal instead. Unfortunately, HD Radio can sound worse than its analog counterpart, especially if the broadcaster isn't putting much care into the digital signal they're sending out.
But all in all, this is an amazing product, especially at this price. I eventually sold my high end audiophile FM tuner and bought a second XDRF1 for use in a second room with a second system - it's THAT good.
It only loses one star for its functionality glitches and for the fact that there's no way to disable HD reception should you want to.
| | great HD radio tuner by Christine FT laud (ft lauderdale florida) 5 Stars March 12, 2010 I hooked this up to my Onkyo reciever (incredibly old but works like new) and got my local HD stations easily. I used the antenna that came with it, and did not have to buy any other equipment to great great HD radio.
