| Another one (HDMI) bites the dust... by Joel B. Knauff (Baltimore, MD USA) 1 Stars November 17, 2009 As has been stated in a number of the reviews here on Amazon, I had the player hooked to a flat-panel LCD TV via an HDMI cable. It worked fine for a few weeks, but the HDMI output died right after the warranty ran out. It now displays everything through the HDMI with pixelated purple coloration, rendering it unwatchable. Spend a few more dollars on a more reliable player. You'll be happy you did.
| | It go bad after 2 days by Dave (atlanta) 1 Stars November 15, 2009 I bought this player 3 days ago at Target and I am returning it today.
It works fine for 2 days, then last night the picture disappear. I tried different
DVDs and the picture comes on and off, or no picture at all.
I have owned a Philips 3140 for 6 months now and it works great. I did some
research on this product and there are lots of bad reviews. I am not bad mouthing
the company but this product is no good. Don't waste your money.
| | HDMI went bad by ieee488 (NJ) 1 Stars October 27, 2009 I bought this player about 6 months ago.
The HDMI out went bad on me today. The video went yellow, then totally out.
This is a problem that happens a lot. Google it.
The component video still works, so the $40 I spent wasn't a complete bust.
| | Philips DVP3982 1080p HDMI DVD Player by Robert G. Weiniger 4 Stars October 15, 2009 When I bought this Philips DVP3982 DVD player back around April, all I was looking for was an inexpensive player that would accommodate AVI DivX videos, something neither our Sony nor the high end Marantz DV9600 player could do. A quick trip to Walmart, a few minutes cross comparing the 'budget' players, about $59 later, and I was headed home with one of these puppies. Naturally, I was expecting nothing more than what one might reasonably expect from a $50 DVD player, which believe me, wasn't much. So imagine my utter surprise when debuting this small, slim inexpensive 'accessory' on Disney's Ratatouille (in 'component video' hookup) to find both picture and sound quality much better than the $300 Sony, and very nearly equal to that of the Marantz DV9600, which cost...let's not even talk about that! Disk after disk, the same results; clear, crisp, detailed pictures you can almost 'peel off the screen' and some VERY impressive audio quality. Yes, the player could have been built a bit more sturdy, but probably not for $59! Likewise, a USB jack on the front panel (for playing videos and mp3 files right from a Flash Drive) would have REALLY been a welcome feature, but again, I can't complain given its price...and I doubt if you will, either! So why only 4 stars, you ask? well, the wireless remote is a bit 'underpowered', occasionally requiring a second, more carefully aimed press of its buttons, and generally slow response to commands. But otherwise, it's an excellent value for the money!
| | Research before U buy... by C. Johnson (Houston, USA) 1 Stars September 14, 2009 ...Hell, I knew better than that. I purchased this DVD at Wal-Mart on Saturday morning. It seem to be a small but nice player for my room, but when I plugged it in and started to play movies, I realized the picture was dark, plus what I thought was my DVD disc scratching (it wasn't) the Phillips DVD player had lost signal from my HDMI cord, (and its claiming it to be a 1080p upscale DVD player-more like downscale) and turned itself off. I had a hard time turning it back on to get my disc out. This crap happened twice in my back room. I decided to move the Phillips DVD from my room to the living room and used the regular yellow, red and white cord that comes in the box (RCA Connector). It played but the picture was still dark, changed the view of the picture to display brighter colors. While my sister, my mother and I were watching Breaking Bad on this newly purchased DVD it cuts off again. Again, I had a hard time turning the Phillips DVD player back on so I could get my DVD disc out.
Didn't want to deal with this any longer, I turned it back to a Wal-Mart close to my home instead of the original purchasing and they told me they couldn't accept it because the code on the box doesn't match with the code written on the DVD player, plus this DVD player itself had minor scratches on it. I told the lady in customer service that the scratches were already there when purchased and opened. I drove back to the original Wal-Mart on 1960, where I purchased it from, and the customer service department also told me the same as my home Wal-Mart said. She told me that box number is another Wal-Mart store (but couldn't give me the location) and would not accept the DVD player back even though I purchased it from that Wal-Mart, still in stock there and I have my receipt. She told me I have a better chance of taking the Philips DVD player out of the box and take it to another Wal-Mart, but then I would've got even exchange probably and I thought it was unnecessary to do that. The lady told me there is nothing the manager could do.
I took the DVD player back to the car with me and decided to call the store manager anyway. Marc Perez, the store manager, wasn't there so I asked to speak with the next person in charge. I told her what I was going through with this DVD player and she took my receipt and the DVD to the back to either make a phone call and/or to look up information about the Phillips DVD. Another woman stated that the player was manufactured in 2008 and they wasn't going to accept it, nor was I going to get my $48 back either. I started talking crazy and after 3 hours I was finally given my money back. Now of course, I can't blame them, it's more like bad inventory or some shipping fool though it would be wonderful to change out the DVD since it's the exact DVD picture that's on the box but different codes. I don't know, but no customer should go through what I went through.
