| this item is a gamble, and I lost by M. Morin 1 Stars February 24, 2010 This product does not work: after setting it up and copying files to the private directory, I tried it on another computer and the supposed "driverless" did not work (no icon in the tray for me to click and launch the fingerprint recognition). This may be due to the computers at my University not letting any program be run, but the description says it's driverless. Moreover half of the files I copied to the private directory appear in the public directory. When I tried it again in my own computer, I could click on the fingerprint application, but it would not launch.
I lost a day's work because I trusted the device to hold my files, and it did not, so I had to come back home.
| | No OSX support, very slow on PC by Qassim Rahmatullah 3 Stars February 11, 2010 Was very excited about the biometric feature and it works very well too. Sad thing is, there is no OSX support and i use an imac and macbook pro. So i use this on my work pc mostly. The read and write speed is very slow, even on a 2.0 USB port.
| | OK with one annoying issue by J. Maynard 4 Stars February 04, 2010 I wanted this USB drive and got it for xmas this past year, I love it for the most part. It holds your passwords, and can encrypt data for you. those functions work but are a little clunky, but they work. the best part is that the drive will not appear until you swipe your finger, so all your data on the drive is off limits until that point. And that aspect works well. The most annoying part is that I have never ever been able to get the thing to work with one finger swipe, it normally takes four or five swipes, and I have had to try as many as 20 swipes before it would work, which is just ridiculous. I have even tried different fingers and redoing it all together. The funny thing is that the picture it shows you of your finger swipe looks amazingly detailed, much more detail that other Biometric scanners I have and use. My laptop (A Motion Computing LE1600) has one and I rarely ever have to swipe it more than once to get into it.
I would recommend this drive, just know this annoying trait and you'll be fine. Maybe they will update the software one day and it will fix this problem ( I will keep checking ).
EDIT: 2/18/2010 I dont know if this thing gets better with age, or maybe I get better at using it but lately it has worked when scanning my figer on the first or second try. thought I needed to update this review since the only issue I had with this unit is becoming a none issue.
| | Just get a normal stick by Mud Ducky (Mn/WI) 2 Stars October 20, 2009 The security features are questionable. Half the time or more, it just lets me get at everything without needing the fingerprint or security code. Fingerprint reader only works sometimes. Just get a normal flash drive and create a 16 character password.
Over priced, semi-functional.
| | Useful for convienence, FAILS as a vital security product. by Benjamin Caudill (Pullman, WA USA) 2 Stars September 01, 2009 I had mixed feelings after having bought the "Transcend JetFlash 220 - USB flash drive". While initially expecting it to be a vital security product I could rely on to store my gobs of password files, vital financial backups, and other personal "necessary evils", I found it to be less than up to my expectations of security. As any Google search could tell you, this is one of the many types of fingerprint flash-drives which are easily "unlocked" with a publicly free, available tool on the internet. Repeat: this does not have the security expected of a "biometric" device, with little more protection than would deter the casual snooper.
This is not to say the device is useless, however. For mere convenience purposes, it's extremely useful. While there is still not Firefox support (and I assume Mac OS X and Linux support lack as well), these aren't major problems in the grand scheme of things.
Overall, take the pros with the cons: don't expect this to be the major tower of security it claims to be, but for convenience, it's worth the price.
