| A little security on a dark night by Ricardo (Pittsburgh, PA USA) 5 Stars November 19, 2009 Etón American Red Cross ARCFR160R Microlink Self-Powered AM/FM/NOAA Weather Radio with Flashlight, Solar Power and Cell Phone Charger (Red)
I purchased this unit after I recently purchased the ARCFR150R radio. The same radio, without the USB charging option. My wife liked the FR150 so much, I ordered the FR160 for myself, mainly because of the larger knobs for the tuning and volume controls. At first I thought I would miss the USB charging option (which works very well, by the way), however, I can keep my FR160 topped off by placing it under a lamp (it's easy to verify if it's getting sufficient light by the LED charging indicator).
The sound quality is actually very good, keeping in perspective the very small size of the radio. The tuning dial is pretty short, so tuning requires a light touch, however, it is very sensitive, and will pull in stations across the dial. The NOAA weather band (it has seven stations) works very well in my location.
The hand crank is great. It has a long shaft, which makes cranking very smooth. It is also very quiet during cranking. Some units I've used are really pretty noisy during the cranking process. I haven't tested the length of playing time yet, but using a little light (or in the case of the FR150 a USB port to top off the battery) I've been able to listen to the radio continuously for well over an hour.
I have yet to use the cell-phone charging option, but I will say this. If I'm ever in a situation were I really need to make a call and my phone is dead, this little radio will be worth its weight in gold.
The last thing I wanted to comment on is the LED flashlight. I can sum it up with one word, wow. It's very bright, with a very "white" light for an LED (some LED lights have a green or blue cast) but this unit is much more like a standard flashlight. Even the beam is very "round" in shape, like a conventional light. It's the first flashlight I reach for in my house, and I have several LED wind-up lights.
To sum up the FR160 (and FR150 for that matter), you really can't go wrong with this radio for the price.
| | Just what I wanted by Amazon junky (San Diego, CA) 4 Stars November 15, 2009 My husband and I purchased and have already tried out a few different emergency radios (to give out as presents) with the intention of keeping the best one for ourselves first. We just received this little red Eton and I love it especially since my motto is that "bigger is not necessarily better". It fits perfectly in my hand and I could probably throw it in my purse if I needed to and it reminds me of the original old transitor radios because of the small size-very cute. We turned it on inside the house and got good reception and no static for the AM/FM radio stations and didn't have to put the antenna up which to me is a bonus. We were only able to tune in to two of the weather stations and had to have the antenna up in order to get them and even had to move to certain parts of the room in order to hear the stations without any static so this was a concern. Also, the volume of the weather stations wasn't nearly as strong as the AM/FM so it was a strain to hear what the announcer was saying. This seems to be the biggest disappointment in the Eton, which is why I rated it only 4 stars instead of 5. But other than that, it is terrific. My husband may keep one of the others we purchased which get a bit better reception with the weather stations but as far as I am concerned, this is a keeper.
| | Great radio for price! by Imnatto 5 Stars October 23, 2009 Ditto all the other raters. I was very impressed with this radio for the price. Hard to tune in station due to small tuner, but otherwise excellent!
| | Small & compact by Lois Mcswain (Kirkwood, MO USA) 4 Stars October 16, 2009 We bought this for our teardrop camper. The radio is small & compact. Easy to use. We've yet to use it in a remote area so I don't know how the reception is in those kind of places.
| | Excellent Emergency Radio by R. Richardson (illinois) 5 Stars October 14, 2009 First off, i absolutely love the compact size of this emergency radio. it is extremely compact to carry around in a daypack, fanny pack or in a pouch on your belt - i used an old walkie talkie sheath. the led light is on the narrow end, as opposed to the front on some models, which makes it easier to handle in flashlight mode. the radio - am,fm and weather - all work very well. all in all, this is the best compact emergency radio i have seen to date.
