I've had 2 Brother laser printers before this one and for this all-in-one it looks like Brother just took a regular laser printer and added two more levels on top for the scanner and a fax.
The bottom line is that it works. It does everything it says it does.
The fax, with the document feeder, has room for about 7 pages to be faxed, and then you have to refill the scanner as it faxes them. The paper scanner/fax is fairly fast. The pages scan at a constant quick speed.
The printer is in a position that's a little awkward. The papers come out from the middle, so the fax part is half open all the time. But whatever, it works that's all that matters.
The ONLY thing I dislike is that the 3 buttons for fax/scan/copy, one of them is always lit up. The light distracts me when the room is dark, so I have to turn off the whole thing.
Otherwise, I would highly recommend it. Brother makes solid products.

Bought this machine about a month ago. Has a relatively small footprint. Works fine, but already needs new toner. So I'm a little suspicious that they skimped on the toner, even though it was brand new out of the box. We have another Brother printer/copier/FAX/scanner that we've had for about a year, and it is still doing well, although it is a higher end model than this new one is. We'll see how long this one lasts...

Easy to set-up, easy to use. Using the XP scanner utility, it spans flawlessly. It prints as expected, seldom jams. It does all that can be expected of it.
We hardly beat it hard, so this review is for relatively mild use. I believe I could use much more and still be equally satisfied.
The toner that came with it has held up well, unlike some start toners that only print a few pages before running out. It looks like buying toner isn't a ripoff either.

If you don't need to print in color, this is the multi-function for you. Compared to inkjet printers, this machine prints quickly and provides crisper, higher quality outputs. The scanner provides very sharp scans with excellent color fidelity. The only reason I did not give it five stars is a fax related issue. My previous HP machine would "listen" for a fax tone. I had my answering machine set to 4 rings and the fax set to 6 rings. This allowed my voice mail to pick up the call, then at 6 rings the HP would listen for a fax tone. If it heard one, it received the fax, if it didn't hear one, it just let the voice mail record the call. With the Brother, you must set the fax capability to "manual" if you have an answering machine for voice mail. This is not a big deal if you only receive faxes infrequently.
This is a fine, relatively quiet machine. I buy a lot of things from Amazon, but bought this from Costco for a much better price, $119.99 plus tax.
You should ignore the bizarre 2 star review that complains about the high per page cost. His calculations use ridiculously high prices for paper and toner.

I had bought Canons in the past and didn't realize that one has alternatives to spending as much on printer cartridges as I was spending. I was forced to buy a new printer because my Canon broke down after only a couple of years. A DP professional advised me to consider a laser printer, telling me that the additional price would be more than offset by savings in cartridges. He did not tell me about the greater speed (not a major concern for me) nor about the relative noiselessness of the laser.
I am more than satisfied with my purchase.
