CUSTOMER REVIEWS (Average Customer Rating: 3.0 based on 59 reviews)
| Do not place too much weight on the negative reviews. This is a GREAT product! by John D. Reichard (New York City) 5 Stars March 14, 2010 So...let me first off just give you a little color around the reason why I was looking to purchase a portable digital TV.
My father is a HUGE Ohio State Buckeye fan. He has always wanted to go to the Rose Bowl, but has never been. So, for Xmas...I gave him tickets on the 45 yard line to the 2010 Rose Bowl Game, flights, hotel and an all expense paid trip to Pasadena. Of course he was elated as we set of to California...
In addition the the Game...we also had seats to the Rose Bowl Parade and the OSU Alumni Association Tailgate Party. Let me just say...a GREAT time was had...
Granted...The Rose Bowl Game was the highlight of the entire trip, but there was ONE thing that made the game SO MUSH MORE ENJOYABLE AND MEMORABLE! Do you know what it was?
Well let me tell you. It was the Tivax HiRez7 Portable TV and docking station that I purchased a few days before Xmas from Amazon. I had a headphone splitter and we were both able to see/hear the Rose bowl game "live" and watch all the replays, calls "under review" and listen to the commentary on ABC. It was PRICELESS. With out question, we were the most popular people in our section as they looked over our shoulders and were constantly asking us about the plays!
Did I tell you that the TV picked up 73 digital channels? I might have missed that one. Plus, while waiting for the Rose Bowl to start, we were able to watch all the other live Bowl games as well.
Case in point...I would say that 15+ people asked me about the TV, the model number, how much it cost and where to get it. I gave out numerous business cards and many of them emailed me about the TV! One gentleman in particular, saw the TV and said in passing, "That is awesome...these guys are hard core."
The one thing that I should tell you is that before buying your TV...I did my research and you should know that this is the ONLY ONE that has a docking station and battery option. The Tivax HiRez7 is the ONLY TV that has an alkaline option battery powered docking station. Kudos to Tivax. Granted, I used rubber bands to keep both the docking station and the TV connected (it makes sense since I was at a live event), but I have talked to Tivax R&D and thy have taken notice and heard my comments.
OK...I am done, but not with out saying THANKS to Tivax! The Tivax HiRez7 TV made a ONCE IN A LIFETIME EVENT...PERFECT! It is something that I will never forget.
Cheers,
John
P.S. I work in sales, so for me to write a review like this should mean something. I am hyper critical, but not with this product.
P.P.S. My Tivax TV is now mounted in my bathroom and I use it everyday as I get ready for work, etc... Great product!
| | Sharon by S. Myles (Chicago, IL) 5 Stars March 03, 2010 This little item actually picked up channels faster than my 15". It is good in a pinch but could do better when you are mobile.
| | Not very good at anything by Jim (Houston, TX USA) 2 Stars February 11, 2010 This TV disappointed me. It delivers mediocre picture quality and sound. It is very confusing to operate and adjust. The lack of "arrow" buttons to navigate the menus is a constant annoyance. I usually just have to try pressing one button after the other to move in a menu and hope to hit the right one. If not, then try again. The instructions are so poor, it is hard to understand what you are supposed to do to operate the thing. It can't receive any of the VHF digital stations in my area: the tiny little included antenna isn't sensitive enough. I could connect it to my attic antenna, but that defeats the purpose of a "portable" TV. I also purchased the dock and it turned out to be a very poor investment. It adds nothing to the sound but it does provide a way to use AA batteries. I should have stayed with my original plan and chosen to power this TV off a 12V storage battery in a rig I could have home-made. After owning this for several months, I now wish I'd returned it. My little analog Casio color TV (now essentially useless) delivered a much better picture and sound quality and took AA batteries to operate. It does not seem like any manufacturers are willing to invest in making a quality, truly "hi-res" little TV. If you buy this one, I suggest you be ready to return it and try something else. I wish I'd done so! (P.S. One nice touch: The little antenna's base is magnetic, so that is helpful in placing it where it might get better reception.)
| | Tivax by J. JohnsonLittrell (Oklahoma USA) 5 Stars February 10, 2010 Because my cable service is analog for channels 2 through 85, and I have only Basic Cable with channels 2 thru 13, I had to return this item. The people at Tivax were extremely helpful, courteous, and professional. The televison was nice and I would have kept it if I could have used it.
It was a Tivax person who informed me that not all cable services are digital. When I call my cable company they informed me that all the hype about digital was for broadcaters and not local cable companys.
Amazon was fast and courteous with the refunds for the tv and the docking station for the tv.
I appreciate all that both Tivax and Amazon did to assist me in this matter.
| | Poor quality portable TV, terrible media player. The HiRez in its name is as gross overstatement by A. Dent (Minas Anor, GD) 1 Stars February 08, 2010 I will be very gentle and I will not let my disappointment show but I will state that, in my view, paying for this item is a bad idea. It is so because what you get is a bad portable TV with a dual personality, its second being that of an absolutely terrible, awful media player. This product should not have been made or sold.
I will first list the good things about this item, because not everything is bad, followed by the more disappointing aspects concerning the Tivax experience.
THE GOOD
- Nice packaging. The TV comes surrounded by a very substantial air-filled, cushion sleeve or pocket. It should be next to impossible for it to get scratched or in any way damaged during transportation.
- Good looks. From a distance, the Tivax looks quite okay.
- Many accessories included: rechargeable batteries, antenna, headphones, AV cables, power adapter, remote control. A docking station and a carrying case can be purchased as 'extras' if needed.
- Good I/O. Besides the antenna port, it comes with USB, SD card interface, headphones, audio in and video in ports.
- Stereo speakers, not bad for such a small TV.
THE BAD
- The resolution is terrible. For a TV that has HiRez7 in its name, the very low resolution is a big disappointment. I couldn't find anyplace in the manual a reference to the actual screen resolution but I suspect it's less than 200 lines.
- The antenna port does not allow for a 'regular' antenna to plug in. The coax connectors tend to be wider that the orifice provided and it's not easy to find something that fits.
- The supplied antenna - the size of my index finger is useless. I got about the same signal strength on this TV with or without it.
- The menu system - sequence of buttons to press to get things done is not always intuitive. After some practice one learns it but... is it really worth it?
- The TV's ability to play music is a joke. The speakers quality is terrible.
- The supplied headphones are probably the cheapest you would ever use.
- The TV's ability to play movies off an SD card or USB drive is, again a joke - see my comments on low resolution and poor speakers quality.
- The TV's ability to display pictures is another joke. There is very little control over what plays, the resolution is low and, incredibly, when set to a 16*9 mode it will stretch all pictures - the only way to display them correctly is in a 4*3 mode which begs the 'why' question, as in 'why bother with a wide screen TV if it can't display properly?'.
In practice, I was able to put together an antenna with a connector that actually plugs into the TV's port and was able to get a couple of channels. The experience was underwhelming, to say the list. Did I mention low resolution and cheap little speakers already? I purchased this items on one of Amazon's lightning deals so I didn't pay a lot but, knowing what I know now, I would not buy this TV for half the price. The only practical use we found for it was as a cheap, feature-poor photo frame, endlessly cycling through a couple thousand photos stored on an SD card, sitting on the kitchen counter. You can get a lot better for a lot less if you buy a dedicated picture frame.
