About what you'd expect from this kind of talent by snakeayes 4 Stars

I first listened to this alubm about six months ago and thought it was decent. It was the first time I'd ever listened to Gamma Ray and only really checked it out because I had just begun listning to Iron Savior and I knew this was Kai's other band. On a whim the other day I went back and listened to it again and something strange happened. I actually remembered most of the songs. Considering that I had only heard this record once before half a year previously, only half paying attention while I was playing Diablo II no less, I was quite impressed. I'm not talking about just singing along by the end of the song, I knew what was coming next and I was singing from the very beginning. I can only chalk this up to Kai's ability to write extremely catchy and memorable songs, this guy really is a genius like everyone says. My personal experience aside, this is some of the best powermetal you can possibly find with great guitar and memorable melodic song structures. I've heard some people complain about Kai's singing ability but I've got no problems with it, he may not be one of the best around but he's certainly more than competent. My only gripe with the compilation is that the first disk is rather heavily laden with more melodic tracks and ballads. If you're a fan of the "happier" side of powermetal then this won't be a problem but I prefer the heavier driving style which is much more prevalent on disk 2. Great stuff.

For those of you who may not know it, GAMMA RAY is Kai Hansen's band. And Kai Hansen was the brain behind HELLOWEEN, the band the practically "invented" european power / melodic metal, with the albums KEEPER OF SEVEN KEYS I and II, back in 1988. AFter that, Hansen left the band due to commercial pressures upon him, and formed Gamma Ray.This double set is good at sometimes, but listening to it back to back may be a little bit annoying, due to the sheer speed of a lot of the songs and that usual double kick drumming all the way.... Also, Hansen is not a singer at all. He's a guitarist that sings. That's very different.Anyway, the re-recorded songs sound good and improved.

bang your skull, fast, hard, melodious, high quality 5 Stars

Let me start saying that, to what my taste respects, Kai Hansen is the gratest composer of our times, the melodies, rhythms and lyrics he writes are just amazing. I personally love the way he composes and plays the guitar the melodies are irresistable. Every melody fits every song in just the perfect way and he makes sure you can sing along while he singing an even when he is playing the solos. Unlike other bands that just play some notes on the guitar very fast but without any melody, GR plays very fast and very hard with great melodies. The rhythms are great, actually the first GR song I ever heard was Valley of the kings, and what really caught me in this song was the great rhythm guitar and bass guitar that kai and dirk played on it. As I already said the whole rhythm section of GR is amazing dirk is the best bassit of the universe and Daniel is the best drummer of the galaxy (I am not sure if Thomas Stauch from BG is better). So this ALBUM just takes the best songs this guys have made and puts them toghether and the only thing you can do is shut up and bang your skull.

This is supposed to be metal???!! by Eriban (CA, USA) 2 Stars

I know I'm going to get negative reviews by posting this, but oh well, it's better to be truthful. My first Gamma Ray album was "No World Order" and I've got to say I loved it. "Eagle" "Heaven or Hell", "Damn the Machine", and "Heart of the Unicorn", and "Fire Below" are all totally awesome songs, and, having loved this album so much I figured this "best of" would be as good or better! Hahaha, well boy did I feel stupid when I popped these discs into my player. The majority of the songs on this album are total trash that resemble metal only in that it has frenetic, insanely fast drumming on many tracks complete with Kai Hansen singing in a voice that sounds like a Munchkin on helium at a rate that tries to keep pace with the drumming... all to the lead of cheesy, keyboard-driven music!! Is there anybody even playing guitar here?! On the other hand, there ARE a few good tracks... the Introduction for one, "Somewhere Out in Space" is another. But these are few and far between, and I was hitting the skip button on my CD player WAY too often considering that there are 2 discs worth of material, and I only liked perhaps 4 songs total between two discs!! All I can say is that I am glad that Gamma Ray's style has matured into what they put out on "No World Order", which is FAR superior to this album. For fans of TRUE epic metal, check out Hammerfall's albums as well... don't buy this album unless you're planning to use the discs as coasters or frisbees.

KAI HANSEN - The Ultimate God of European Heavy Metal. Nobody in his clear conscience can dispute this argument. Gamma Ray is now much more solid than Helloween ever was (altugh it does not sell so much as Helloween).Kai and his pals did the right thing re-recording the best Gamma Ray songs. The sheer hability of this band is overwhelming, it will leave you breathless. I do not own all Gamma Ray CD's, I've got (until buying Blast) Insanity & Genius, Land of the Free and SOmewhere Out In Space. But I was never a great fan of RAlf Scheepers's vocals, so I did not care about buyin the first albuns, even knowing the songs were good. Now, with Kai handling the vocals for the old songs, everything falled into place. THis double-DC will "convert" you to the Gamma Ray cause forever, I assure you that.
