| Truly Amazing by Jodee Brower (PA) 5 Stars September 06, 2008 Banjamin was very unique. His music is haunting truthful and raw. I listen to almost daily. He is orginal and this is my favorate cd. I remember him from the early days. Nothing could keep him down.I miss him. I also ordered the documenrty and Im still waiting for it. I recomend this cd to anyone that is into sadness turned to hummer and can appreciate the brilliants in the way the band comes together and the just how beautiful this music realy is - and how brilliant Benjamin was.
| | A simply beautiful album... by kinojay33 5 Stars July 17, 2004 These are some of the most beautiful songs I have ever heard. Imagine the melancholy of Elliot Smith and Vic Chestnut meeting the rough voiced nostalgia of Tom Waits and you begin to understand Smoke. Check out the documentary "Benjamin Smoke" by Jem Cohen--it's incredible, like everything else Cohen has made.
| | Like that one hair on my back by Stephen Haske (Savannah, GA) 5 Stars November 19, 2003 I came to this band via the documentary, Benjamin Smoke, and bought this CD almost immeadiately afterwards. The song about Luke's 90210 feet is the one that hooked me. Not so much the lyrics, which are very humorous, but the music got me. I was amazed that I hadn't heard of this band before. I like REM (Micheal Stipe being Smoke/Opal Foxx's early benifactor), I like Kelly Hogan (The Jody Grind/Atlanta connection), and I like Tom Waits (Benjamin's vocal doppelganger). I mean, somebody could have said something to me! Anyway, now I know and you should too. However, this is not smooth music. This will not slide through you like a baby elephant walk would. This is more like swallowing a bunch of bad pennies, and then coughing them up the next morning. Or like that singular hair on my back, ugly and proud. When I was younger I would have plucked it. Now I know it is part of me.
| | Americana Joy Division by K. H. Orton (New York, NY USA) 5 Stars November 19, 2003 I love this band. They're raw, beautiful & quite simply one of the most original things I've heard in years. How many acts can you name feature cello & coronet as more than occasional accompaniment?
Top it all off with a late great, eccentric frontman who sounds like a dead ringer for Tom Waits. Or imagine Nick Cave in drag backed by the likes of Lambhop. In terms of their dark tone, they come off a bit like an Americana Joy Division.
"Hole" starts things off like a bar hopping Long Day's Journey Into Night. But the beautiful, morning after rhapsody of "Awake" provides the perfect antidote. Up next is "Freak" a perfect ode to growing up odd in a small town. Hank Aaron is a true standout featuring the line, "she's sewing hankerchiefs to catch our tears". Celebrity obsession is taken to hilarious extremes with, "Luke's Feet". "Curtains" closes it all with a graceful pull of the drapes.
If you're unfamiliar with the documentry, "Benjamin Smoke", this album serves as the soundtrack. Like the film, this record verges from the raw to the dreamlike.
Now, some @$$hole is trying to sell this thing here for $72.00 used. I happen to know you can this & their other album, ANOTHER REASON TOO FAST at cdbaby.com for something like $11.99 (new).
| | A wonderful hidden gem. Lucky I found me some! by S. Granger (Los Angeles, California United States) 5 Stars March 02, 2003 HIGHLY RECOMMENDED if you are a Tom Waits or Nick Cave fan. Or anyone who likes good music. When I was probably too young to get in a few of us snuck in to see Opal Foxx Quartet. We'd heard about The Impotent Sea Snakes so wanted to check out what was going on. I guess we ended up staying too late for our own good. But for reasons we didn't quite understand we loved l Foxx and then Smoke both were so unique. Sort of like the beauty of dirt. If you just glance you might get the wrong idea. Stay, stare and you'll realize how great the music really is. Benjamin was always great. I personally had the pleasure of meeting him on various occasions. In clubs, bars, or elsewhere. The few recordings that exists are a treasure of his work. Definitely shouldn't be missed. Benjamin says himself in the film BENJAMIN SMOKE that it's best not to talk too much about the music. Because it can affect everyone in a different way. So I won't...except to say that this disc is a must have if you can find it especially for the songs HOLE and FREAK.
