After all, Dante's Peak doesn't pretend to be anything more than an updated variation on a whole catalog of disaster movie clichés. Despite all that, it's reasonably enjoyable. It's an added bonus that the script is just smart enough to allow Pierce Brosnan and Linda Hamilton to play their roles with straight faces, never condescending to the audience of the formulaic story. He's a volcano expert from the U.S. Geological Survey, and she's the mayor of a cozy Washington State town perched beneath a volcano that's about to blow. Telltale signs are everywhere, so evacuation must be carried out immediately. Of course, not everybody's eager to leave, and even some of Brosnan's colleagues think his alarm is premature. This sets the stage for massive ash clouds, rivers of raging mud and molten rock, flattened forests, and death-defying escapes by Brosnan, Hamilton, and some (but not all) of her family, friends, and townsfolk. So what if it's all pretty flaky... and can a four-wheel-drive vehicle travel over fire and molten lava without bursting its tires? Don't ask too many questions, and you'll find Dante's Peak to be (if you'll pardon the pun) a total blast. The Collector's Edition DVD includes a documentary about volcanoes, Getting Close to the Show, in addition to behind-the-scenes footage, exclusive coverage of the creation of special effects, and audio commentary with director Roger Donaldson. --Jeff Shannon |

| Classic Favorite by Woodlandtrails 5 Stars October 21, 2009 Watching Dante's Peake is like watching the Wizard of Oz. People snuggle down on the couch with a batch of popcorn and watch at least once or twice a year. It is a simple enjoyable movie plot about a town in denial, a single mother with children who falls in love with the geologist come to save them all. There are funny, romantic, and scary scenes and even though we memorized the plot, our hearts still speed up at the frightening parts.
| | Conventional volcano film by drkhimxz (Freehold, NJ, USA) 4 Stars October 10, 2009 Despite its conformity to the conventions governing volcano pictures, the film makes for pleasant viewing. There are no real villains in the piece, lots of fireworks, and an attractive cast. The director fits the piece together nicely, avoiding too great an emphasis on pseudo-scientific explanation, and letting us see Pierce Brosnan and Linda Hamilton in various stances. Should appeal to most members of the family without creating difficulties over language or behavior (save for some minor expletives). Well done entry in the genre.
| | I like P. Brosnan by Orange Blossom Meadow (Mid Ohio) 5 Stars July 06, 2009 This is an exciting and interesting flick. Has suspense, romance, daily living concerns and a satisfying ending. What is DOESN'T have is: violence, TVMA sex (nudity, etc) or profanity.
| | Grade: B+ by Eric S. Kim (Southern California) 4 Stars June 08, 2009 What's bad about this film? Well, the dialogue's pretty cheesy, the plot is a bit weak, and some of the characters may be a a bit annoying to some people.
What's good about this film? Basically, everything else. The volcano and its special effects are the true stars of this film. From the first eruption to the final pyroclastic attack, these are some of the most realistic CGI shots I've ever seen. In fact, most CGI shots don't even look like they came straight from a computer. The unusual scientific accuracy also plays a part in this film, so you could quite possibly see this as a half-film, half-scientific documentary.
The cast and crew surely did a great job with this one. It's too bad that most disaster flicks of today aren't as good and realistic as this one.
| | BOGIE by BASIAMAN 4 Stars May 11, 2009 Good action flick. Movie was filmed in the old silver mining town of Wallace Idaho. When speaking with several of the locals there, they told me they actually closed the town for a period of time while filming.. Had a great lunch there in a restaurant called the 1313.
