Although its tale of marital crisis unfolds a bit too cleanly, A Walk on the Moon--which was coproduced by Dustin Hoffman--offers a welcome relief from the juvenile assault of skull-throbbing blockbusters. The story is gently involving, the characters are authentic, and, best of all, Diane Lane is given a chance to show why she's one of the most genuine and underrated actresses of her generation. Here she plays Pearl Kantrowitz, a devoted housewife on a routine vacation in the Catskills with her TV repairman husband Marty (Liev Schreiber), 14-year-old daughter (Anna Paquin), and rambunctious younger son (Tovah Feldshuh). It's the summer of 1969. Neil Armstrong has made his "one small step for man," Woodstock is about to happen nearby (leading to a barely plausible dramatic coincidence), and while her husband is away on business, Pearl is cautiously receptive to the seductions of "the blouse man" (Viggo Mortensen), a hippie salesman who offers the adventure and passion that Pearl sacrificed to young pregnancy and marriage. Once the stage for infidelity is set, A Walk on the Moon progresses predictably, but first-time screenwriter Pamela Gray stays true to the emotions of her characters, and actor Tony Goldwyn (making a smooth directorial debut) maintains precisely the right tone to downplay most of the movie's dramatic clichés. Add to this a sharp dynamic between Lane and Paquin, whose performances create a substantial mother-daughter relationship. I had never heard of this movie, nor Viggo Mortensen, when I first caught this on TV. It is now one of my most favorite films of all time. It's hard to describe why I love it so much and certainly the fact that I grew up in the 60's is part of its appeal. This is such a lovely little movie. Definitely a 4 hanky. And if you thought you liked Viggo in LOTR, he'll pretty much knock your socks off in this one. And the homage to Woodstock and the moon landing - very sentimental for an old hippie like me.

1. For full disclosure, this isn't my type of film. But I recently had an occasion to essentially suffer through this film and man, I felt more sad than irritated with having wasted my time watching this drivel.
2. Basically, it's another one of those very pathetic films about pathetic people who don't have anything else to do other than worry about other than how uphappy they are. In an ironic way, this may be a beneficial film in that it's instructional of how one's kids will end up if you overindulge them (ie the greatest generation giving rise to the 60s generation).

DIANE LADD GIVES AN OUTSTANDING PERFORMANCE AS A WOMAN WHO IS LOOKING FOR SOMETHING IN HER BUSY LIFE BUT DOES NOT LOOK FOR THAT MYSTERIOUS SOMETHING IN THE RIGHT PLACES. SHE IS HUNGRY FOR ATTENTION AND LOVE BUT IS NOT SATISFIED WITH THE BEINGS AROUND HER. SHE THINKS THE ANSWER IS OUTSIDE HERSELF WHEN IT IS REALLY AN UNHAPPINESS WITH HER OWN SOUL.
AS WE FOLLOW HER SEARCHING AND GETTING INVOLVED WITH ANOTHER LOST SOUL, SHE BEGINS TO REALIZE THE ANSWER IS NOT OUTSIDE BUT WITHIN HERSELF. SHE GAINS WISDOM AND SO DO WE AS WE WATCH HER STUMBLE AND FAL, BUT WE GAIN NEW INSIGHTS INTO A COMMON HUMAN PROBLEM.DIANNE LADD CAN DO NO WRONG IN THIS MOVIE, BECAUSE LEARNING TO LOVE IS OUR JOB HERE ON EARTH! BRAVO DIANNE!

This is one of my favorite films. And not just because it has Viggo in it. My favorite character is the grandma, played by Tovah Feldshuh. But they are all so good together, it has warmth, humor, family, great music, Woodstock, and all types of emotional passion in it. It is one I watch again and again.
