A very nice "beginner's" Astronomy DVD by L. Gonzalez (New York) 5 Stars
February 16, 2007
My whole family greatly enjoys this DVD narrated by Starry Night Astronomy correspondent Dave Brody. It dedicates about 10 minutes on each major Astronomical topic, such as the inner & outer planets, the Sun, stars & star formation, nova & supernovae, asteroids, Messier objects, comets, etc. Entertaining footage and simulations, many that we have not seen before, as well as beautiful paintings and artwork by various artists. One of the highlights of this DVD is that it features many video and audio comments by Astronomers and experts from various specialized fields. Another big plus is the soothing & ambient "Space Music" of Jonn Serrie, most of which seems to have come from his compilation CD "Century Seasons". We are greatful to this DVD for introducing us to Jonn Serrie music. It took us a while to find out who to credit for the music because, strangely, the DVD has no production credits anywhere, neither in the program nor on the box - an unusual & unfortunate decision. The overall "feel" of the material is similar to what Carl Sagan did in "Cosmos" -positive and relaxing. The intro. attempts to make us feel like we are a part of an "eternal" Universe, and the relaxing voice of the narrator reminds us that the stars will always be there for us. Not too technical, suitable for all ages, a good "beginner" Astronomy DVD. You can view the whole program or just a particular section. We think most people will like it, and we think it deserves attention.
