| Too advanced for pain sufferers by M. L. Phelps (California) 2 Stars February 18, 2008 This is not an easy routine. If you're in pain, start with Peggy Cappy's Yoga for the Rest of Us. You will feel better for it!
| | Fantastic! by Stephanie (Virginia) 5 Stars January 28, 2008 Honestly, advanced. She moves through the salutations quickly and it is a challange, but if you have experience with yoga and are looking for a good way to relax and stretch, in my case, upper back and shoulder pain, it's definately a score!
| | Bad music, little body awareness, some good stretches only by Lena, LMT *DVD Renter* (Nassau, NY) 3 Stars November 29, 2007 Dr. Beth did a great job reviewing the content of this dvd.
Allison is perky & almost aerobics instructor style teaching w/a man & a woman (modifier) doing the movements with her in a gym looking studio. If you're looking for relaxed or calming workout, with increasing your awareness of your body & breathing, you won't find it here. If you're watered down yoga w/a gym class feel, here ya go. The music is annoying, reminds me of the beginning music to a serious PBS documentary on a loop, at another time reminds me of the dramatic music symphony during a dramatic scene in a movie. She tells you only when to inhale, she tells you some nice analogies, but she doesn't seem to understand them at all. She tells you only the sun salutation pose names. This is not for anyone who doesn't already know yoga poses memorized by name.
Level 1/beginner
As another reviewer said, the beginner/Level 1 was mostly all sun salutations w/cat/cow in the beginning & lunges & very short few chair poses.
The only moves I saw was using a strap raised & lowered, airplane arms during high lunges, gripping the hands behind the back (use strap if can't reach) & eagle pose hands only, threading the needle pose (one shoulder on ground when on knees), & a kinda pigeon pose leg but easier & then lay on your stomach & 1 arm raised up (my shoulders weren't bothering me when did this, but felt no stretch in my shoulders). At the 30 min mark, she does on elbows modified leg lifts & boat pose & before savasana/relax she has you lay with the block under your upper back to create a stretch.
Level 2/Intermediate/Advanced
Starts the same, but more chair poses & warrior 1, same arm stretches w/strap but further back & completely from stomach & around to fat back you can & back/forth slowly, 3 legged down dog, pigeon, pigeon w/threating the needle type arms like previous workout, & also spinal twist in that pose, basic seated spinal twist w/eagle hands like picture on the dvd, hands gripping each other behind the back again w/spinal turn/twist while sitting which was nice, same ab work w/straight legs to make it harder & ends the same with block under spine to stretch the shoulder/spine & savasana.
Allison seems nice enough, but the music, her stiff voice really killed it for me as well as too much repetitiveness with the basic sun salutations. Yoga is for listening to your body, being aware, not just to be more muscular, or stretching like a 1-2-3 rush job. You have to really sense what angle your body needs, every degree counts & rushing will only injure it more. There were some good poses, but even though I was not having any trapezius muscle soreness/spasms, I had some soreness/slight spasms after doing this dvd.
The idea is great, but there needs to be a better instructor.
I've been doing yoga for 5 years & very important for my safety as well as enjoying the session that the instructor has body awareness I can follow like Rodney Yee, Rainbeau Mars, Seane Corn, Wai Lana, etc. & Allison is not even close.
You can see two more reviews at Yoga Wisdom for Neck Pain and Tight Shoulders DVD & look up her other title for Back pain & Tight Hips for reviews about the set/studio & her style of teaching.
| | Great For Neck & Other Pain by Bbphile (New England) 5 Stars October 25, 2007 I found this DVD to be extremely useful for the neck pain I experience due to the long spreads of time I spend on the computer. Easy to modify if that's what you prefer, this DVD incorporates some solid, effective poses into your yoga routine. I do believe this workout is best for those who are already familiar with yoga; if you've never done yoga before, and particularly if you don't have a regular fitness routine in your schedule, you may wish to try a light gentle stretching DVD first, such as Cathe Friedrich's Stretch Max or Total Body Stretching. However, if you are familiar with the principals of yoga and have even tried a few poses, then this DVD should help alleviate not only your neck and shoulder pain, but create a wash of energy and relieve down your entire spine. I look forward to this workout several evenings per week.
| | Wonderful set of exercise for upper back pain suffers. by Hanna (San Diego) 5 Stars October 17, 2007 I am an upper back pain suffer and sometimes I have acute pain. I basically have to take muscle relaxant everyday. I have gone through physical therapy 4 times but it did not help me much. My upper body is simply used to be too tight (shoulders and neck). I am so glad that I found out about this dvd. After each practice of these exercises, I feel my upper body so released as I have not felt for a long time. It is important to emphasize that I have been practicing only the beginner's level.
I was never able to follow yoga instructions given in yoga classes... they were too tough for me. I am not a flexible person and would have even more pain after regular yoga classes. Therefore, I would give up. Being able to do it at home was the key! I could take my time and watch the exercises over and over in order to do them correctly. By doing so, I realized that I couldn't do one of the twisting exercises that Ms Nollan teaches - it is the first one after she works on the yoga strap (my neck hurts a lot if I do this one). Therefore, pay attention and listen to your body.... do not try to do everything! At the same time, do not give up if you cannot do most of the exercises in the first several attempts, keep trying... you can do it!
In sum, I am so satisfied with the results that I cannot emphasize enough how beneficial these exercises have been for me!! I think that I am ready to move towards the advanced part of the dvd.
