EDITORIAL REVIEWS | Product description Gilbert Grape (Johnny Depp) lives in Endora, a place where nothing much happens. The only times the police got something to do is when Gilbert's autistic brother Arnie (Leonardo DiCaprio) tries to climb up on the watertower nearby. Taking care of Arnie is mostly Gilbert's task which can be pretty demanding, at least while you are working at the local grocery store. Then one day Becky (Juliette Lewis) and her grandmother passes through Endora getting trouble with the car. Gilbert falls in love with Becky, but gets problems when he tries to find time for his own private life. | Amazon.com This is the movie that Leonardo DiCaprio received an Oscar nomination for, five years before Titanic. And, in fact, this is the movie that should have made him a star, he's so good in it. Based on the novel by Peter Hedges (who adapted his own book) and directed by Lasse Hallström (My Life as a Dog), this is the funny, moody tale of a young man named Gilbert Grape (Johnny Depp) who lives at home in a small town with his 500-pound Momma (beautifully played by nonpro Darlene Cates), his mentally retarded younger brother Arnie (DiCaprio, utterly convincing), and his sisters. Not a lot happens--Arnie keeps climbing a water tower and getting stuck; Gilbert is involved with a married woman (Mary Steenburgen), then meets a nice new girl in town who's closer to his age (Juliette Lewis). And that's exactly what makes this movie so much more than your run-of-the-mill Hollywood product: it's not about some mechanical, formulaic plot; it's about these characters, and it allows you to spend some time with them and get to know them. Depp may have started out as a TV teen idol on 21 Jump Street, but his feature film choices since then--in such wonderfully offbeat and diverse movies as Cry-Baby, Edward Scissorhands, Benny & Joon, Donnie Brasco--have made him one of the most interesting, unpredictable, and risk-taking young actors in American movies. --Jim Emerson |

| Can't go wrong by Stephen Quaid (Raleigh, NC) 4 Stars November 10, 2009 If you like Johnny Depp or Leanardo DeCaprio this is a must see from their early years. Also tells a story of a mothers love and the love returned, no matter what.

| | Remarkable Movie! by Jena Brazda (Rohnert Park, Ca) 5 Stars July 14, 2009 I enjoyed this movie when I first saw it and love it even more after watching it several times. I was not a Leonardo DiCaprio fan before seeing this movie but after I saw this movie I became one. I thought that he did such a great job in this movie that I actually believed he was a mentally handicapped boy. Then you have Johnny Depp's character Gilbert that is just trying to hold his family together and doing his best at trying to watch out for his younger brother Arnie. This movie is one of those movies that just touches your heart and makes you think twice about little actions that people do in day to day life, you may end up walking away feeling a little different after this movie. Watch it and you will see.
| | (Honorary) Oscar-Worthy by Comic Enthusiast (Plant City) 5 Stars June 10, 2009 This was an excellent movie, that was critically acclaimed, but the public didn't bother to really make it a blockbuster. It has excellent performances by all the cast. I Loved this film and brought it in for my class to see on a free day. It is a heart-filled drama, and a sanctuary from the high-budgeted films with poor actors we see so often today.
| | Should have been an oscar for Dicaprio by J. Milligan (Florida) 5 Stars June 08, 2009 Johnny Depp plays the older brother of Leonardo Dicaprio who plays a retarded young boy. Leonardo nailed this part and I think he deserved an Oscar. Johnny Depp is the backbone of the family. His mother is severely overweight, never leaves the house, and the community makes fun of her. Leonardo is always trying to climb the town's water tower and causes problems for the local police. Johnny Depp has always taken care of his brother until the love bug bites and he has problems juggling his private affairs and watching over the family.

| Nick of Time Starring: Johnny Depp, Courtney Chase, Charles S. Dutton, Christopher Walken, Roma Maffia Directed By: John Badham
The clock is ticking for Johnny Depp in Nick of Time, a twist-filled, race-against-time thriller directed by John Badham (Drop Zone, Saturday Night Fever). And indeed it is a race, filmed in "real time" so that onscreen events unfold minute by nail-biting minute as they would in real life. No sooner does accountant Gene Watson (Depp) arrive at L.A.'s Union station with his six-year-old daughter than he's plunged into a nightmare. Two shadowy strangers (Christopher Walken, Roma Maffia) separate...
