| Two pioneering spirits by Shalom Freedman (Jerusalem,Israel) 5 Stars February 07, 2008 Charlie Rose speaks with the French surgeon who operated on him and saved his life. The Doctor who is considered the major expert in his area( mitrochondrial valve surgery) in the world explains that his aim is not simply to save the person's life. It is not even to restore them to reasonable way of life. It is rather to enable them to go back and live a completely normal life. The discussion focuses on the pioneering work done by this remarkable doctor.
In the second segment Craig Venter talks about the deciphering of the human genome, and more recently his own personal 'genome'. He is the first person in the world for whom this has been done. He explains that the kind of information yielded gives him a sense of probabilities in regard to various health problems we may have in life. He too explains that the first deciphering of the Genome was imperfect. And too that it supposed a much smaller margin of difference between individual human genomes. This is now estimated to be between one and two percent, and not the smaller figure Venter had publicized earlier.
Venter also speaks about his efforts to contribute to allievating the problem of global-warming. He is working on the synthesis of synthetic life which would absorb carbon dioxide. Rose at one point asks him about his quarrels with Frances Collins and James Watson, and about his large ego. Venter seems a bit taken aback. But this is all minor stuff when one considers the enormity of his accomplishments and the importance of the work he has done.
