| Exciting space travel by L. Ferguson (BC, Canada) 4 Stars November 16, 2009 If you would like to learn more about what scientists are doing in order to be and travel in space.
| | disappointing season by Marvin Taylor (USA) 2 Stars November 07, 2009 Ok. As a scientist, I found the first 2 seasons to be quite entertaining even though the material is fairly basic (it's not meant to be for astrophysics geeks). The show has always had alot of bang and big and bold photos, very colorful, very creative. Then there's the third season... come on. Sex in space? what a crappy episode. There is so much that we know (and don't know) about space that they can go on and on and talk about the Universe for the next 30 years...but instead they got this snoozer lame episode about popping out kids in space with very little fact and mostly just opinions and speculation. They didn't even really bother getting into the details regarding the animal research that has been done. I had to shut it off...couldn't finish watching that stupid episode. And the episode which talks about neutrinos....didn't even properly define it. Good job, professors. If you are really trying to educate the public about space and you want to talk about particles, you should really go back to the basics of physics and talk about each particle and their importance...then talk about neutrinos. Instead, we get a smoke-and-mirrors light show which is supposed to represent a bunch of neutrinos whizzing around.
I figure that the people watching Season 3 of The Universe have probably seen the first two seasons or if not, after watching episodes from this season, should be motivated to watch 1 and 2. Maybe the people making the show should make it a little more sophisticated and elevate the level of complexity of the show...but instead, the show tries to oversimply abstract complex theories instead of teaching its viewers anything concrete; The Universe, our Heisenberg Multiverse of 11 dimensions, is just a cheap light show in Season 3.
In case you are wondering. 5 stars for season 1. 4 stars for season 2.
| | Continued success! by The Myth (U.S.) 4 Stars November 02, 2009 Excellent series as a whole, and this addition is a must have for your collection.......a bit obvious
wouldn't you say?! If you enjoyed the others, you will enjoy this too. If you are a first time buyer,
then I would begin my selection with the first year, but these programs are set up in no particular
order, so you could begin with this series first if you like. Great show!
| | Slow season, too many fluff episodes by Tallin (U.S.) 3 Stars October 28, 2009 It seems the bad economy took a bite out of the budget for this series last year. The first two seasons were great, but this time I noticed many episodes are just science fiction, CG constructs with little to no real science, just conjecture. The CG is very repetitive. I wouldn't have minded 1 or 2 of these filler type episodes, but in an already shorter season, it turns out that more than half are like this. 'Alien Faces' was nothing more than 5 pretend worlds where some very cheesy CG renders show us what aliens 'might' look like, based on imagination and various animals on earth. Ho hum. Another couple episodes are about an asteroid hitting the earth, one is how we could avoid that disaster, the other how to find out if it will happen. The 'Sex in Space', aside from the giggle factor, is kind of like the Alien species episode, what will happen to the human race in space over time . . . There is also a 'what if' episode about the disasters that could happen in space if we live on Mars, etc.
I also noticed that they are also re using the same 4 or 5 CG illustrations over and over again. The supernova one in particular, it explodes and the same little planet at the right side disintegrates. Fascinating the first few times, but 5 or 6 times per episode is pushing it a bit.
It looks like the show is back on track for season 4. Hopefully they stay away from the sillier stuff, there is enough mystery in the universe that has been observed to occupy 6 more seasons without cheesy CG aliens in 3 d rendered environments.
| | Just amazing by J. McCabe (Phoenix, AZ) 5 Stars September 24, 2009 I didn't even realize this was a "season 3" and now we're going to have to get Seasons 1&2. This is one of the most educational things my husband and I have watched and the imagery is amazing. We haven't finished it yet but so far I would say it's too complicated for children but they would probably enjoy it anyway.
