Witness the sun s birth at the dawn of our solar system, and its death, billions of years in the future; explore the possibility of a human settlement on Mars; and learn about the devastating threats posed by the meteorites, comets, and asteroids that routinely collide with Earth. From the farthest planets and stars in our solar system, back to the familiar face of our moon, HISTORY brings the mysteries of the heavens down to earth.DISC ONE: Secrets of the Sun / Mars: The Red Planet / The End of the Earth: Deep Space Threats To Our Planet / Jupiter: The Giant PlanetDISC TWO: The Moon / Spaceship Earth / The Inner Planets: Mercury & Venus | Amazon.com The sky and outer space have fascinated man for centuries and the History Channel's series The Universe is the story of man's study of the cosmos from his earliest attempts to map and understand the heavens through modern-day scientific studies, advances, and theories. A mix of historical footage, modern space imaging, and conceptual computer graphics presented in high-definition, the visual component of this production is absolutely breathtaking. Each of the 44-minute episodes begins with a general introduction of subjects ranging from the sun to individual planets. Each topic is then broken down into a series of segments that detail specific ideas, theories, or components integral to the understanding of the main topic as well as historical material, current studies and theories, and projections of potential future events and scientific advances. The two-disc set The Universe: Our Solar System consists of seven episodes from the first season: "Secrets of the Sun," "Mars: The Red Planet," "The End of the Earth: Deep Space Threats To Our Planet," "Jupiter: The Giant Planet," "The Moon," "Spaceship Earth," and" The Inner Planets: Mercury & Venus." --Tami Horiuchi |

| Not the Whole Solar System by Patrick J. Murpphy (Fayetteville, NC) 5 Stars July 25, 2009 While certainly a great 2 disk video set, it it misnamed. The series is extremely detailed and looks great. The disks cover Mercury, Venus, Earth, the Moon, the Sun, Mars, and Jupiter. It does not cover the outer gas giant planets; nor mention them. Many moons of the large gas giants are fascinating; the ones around Jupiter get short shrifted. I don't enjoy commentaries that over over dramatized either; this set has a bit of that. I want the facts, not dramatization. I know the sun will self destruct eventually, for instance; no need to be dramatic. The great plus to the set is the CGI is up to date and done well. Great teaching tool for the planets mentioned. The detail on the Moon was very good!
