EDITORIAL REVIEWS | Product Description A deliciously healthy cooking oil. Better than butter. USDA organic. Unrefined & no trans fats. Rich in lauric acid. A soothing body oil. The coconut oil myth. Coconut oil has been mistakenly described as not healthy. The fact is, coconut oil is cholesterol-free and rich in medium-chain good fats that doctors recommend. Why is it that baby formulas often include coconut oil? Because coconut is one of the world's most nourishing super foods. Nutritionists suggest enjoying up to 3 tbsp of extra-virgin coconut oil each day, so help yourself to this heavenly, creamy taste of the tropics. Nutiva's cold-pressed Coconut Oil is: Extra-virgin & pure white: not refined, deodorized or bleached! Organic: so it's free from pesticides, GMOs and hexane. Versatile: Ideal as high-heat cooking oil (up to 350 degrees), as a nutritious substitute in baking, a better-than-butter replacement on bread, vegetables or popcorn, and as a luscious oil for skin care, hair care, and massage. America needs an oil change. While doctors suggest we consume a 4:1 ratio of Omega-6 to Omega-3, the average American diet provides a ratio of 20:1 or more - contributing to heart disease, skin disorders, and arterial inflammation. So avoid out of balance soy, corn, and canola oils with their trans fats, oxidation, and GMOs. Cook with coconut oil (with only 1% Omega-6), and use olive oil (also low in Omega-6), and hemp oil (with the perfect 3:1 Omega ratio) for unheated recipes. Nature's ideal all-purpose cooking oil. No trans or hydrogenated fat; no cholesterol or hexane. Unlike other brands, we press our coconuts within 2 hours of chopping. No refrigeration required. Solid at room temperature and melts at 76 degrees. Any coconut husk fibers at the bottom of the jar are indigenous to the processing and harmless. Coconut oil contains medium-chain good fats with 50-55% lauric acid - a healthful nutrient that supports the metabolism. Certified organic by QAI. Product of the Philippines. |
CUSTOMER REVIEWS (Average Customer Rating: 5.0 based on 177 reviews)
| I should have bought it here by H. Clabaugh 5 Stars November 10, 2009 I just bought my second jar at my local whole foods store. I should've checked Amazon first, it's much cheaper here.
This stuff is delicious. It has a yummy aroma, too. I've been successfully substituting it for butter in bread machine machine recipes, and for other oils in grains, veggies, and even chili. If you use a smaller amount, it just tastes delicious without being obviously coconut, though the coconut flavor is usually a plus.
I've read a good bit on the health ramifications, and think it is in fact healthier than most vegetable oils.
| | Good for Multiple Purposes by It'sMeEbonee (San Antonio, TX) 5 Stars November 08, 2009 I ordered this product in June (5 months ago) and I love it! I have been using it for so many different things. I use it to deep condition my hair...put the oil on my hair, sit under the dryer for 20-30mins, wash it out and style. I contribute it to the health of my hair, shing strong hair. I use it on my skin, just a litte bit on my face does wonders. Leaves my skin soft with a supple texture. I used it the other day to make a box of Duncan Hines brownies. The box said use vegetable oil but I used coconut oil instead and the brownies turned out awesome and so delicious. I also have used it to fry and scramble eggs in the place of butter. I'm pretty sure there are thousands of other uses, but these are just a few I have tried.
| | favorite coconut oil by Stephen Throop 5 Stars November 07, 2009 In 1892, pathologist William Osler described a whitish area on a heart, the telltale sign of myocardial infarction. In hundreds of thousands of autopsies over two centuries, none had been found before. As consumption of vegetable oils increased, heart attacks became increasingly common. By 1930 they were the leading cause of death in America.
People ate animal fats, olive oil, and coconut oil for thousands of years before the epidemic. Coconut oil stands up well to cooking. Nutiva has a pleasant fragrance and is soft enough to spoon in winter. It's cheaper than some brands. Large jars are practical because it stays fresh on the shelf for many months after opening.
| | Excellent quality and price - highly recommended. by M. Koch 5 Stars October 27, 2009 My husband and I have been buying Spectrum's unrefined coconut oil (not cold pressed) from a local organic food store, and decided to try this less expensive brand. What we discovered is that not only is Nutiva cheaper, but it's a better, higher quality product. Since this is cold pressed, it retains more of the fresh aroma and is whiter in color. We have not tried very many brands of coconut oil, so there's probably better ones out there. But we are more than satisfied with the quality of this oil; it really does taste better than what we had, which we thought was pretty good. The low price combined with the low shipping cost mean we save 40% over getting it from the local store - there's no reason for us to look any further.
Don't be shocked if you read that some of us eat this with a spoon (we do it with a little Splendor sprinkled on) - many people take unrefined coconut oil as a dietary supplement. Do some research and you'll see the benefits unrefined coconut oil has to offer. After reading a health book, my husband started taking it three times a day with his meals, and in 2 weeks have lost almost 10 pounds - without changing much else of what he eats/does. He does have an active life style therefore higher metabolism, so his results may not be typical (I think somehow it's easier for men to lose weight than women in general, really unfair :P). I didn't do it before because of the cost, but now at this price I'm going to order more and will begin to do the same.
I saw some reviews gave this a lower rating because the buyer didn't like the strong aroma - please note that cold pressed coconut oil will naturally have a strong scent of coconut, and it may not be for everyone. If you don't like the smell of coconut in your food, you may not want this as a cooking oil. Get the expeller pressed kind that isn't cold pressed, or get the refined version that has little to no scent. Coconut oil is a very good high temperature cooking oil, and is even better for deep frying. You can also make popcorn with it - it's much better than the "healthy oil".
Note: these do come in clear plastic jars - which I don't mind because it means less expensive to ship. But oils in general should be stored away from light if the container is not shaded; so be sure to store them in a cool and dark place. We plan to order them in the smaller jars for freshness.
We highly recommend this product, we hope you'll enjoy it just as much.
| | Cleared up my dog's hot spots and ear infection naturally by L. Clay (Southern California) 5 Stars October 15, 2009 Wow. Amazing stuff. I bought this about 2 months ago and already have used a third of the HUGE jar. My Beagle always gets hots spots on her skin. I rubbed this is her coat (which she loved)- sure she licked all over- no worries as it's all natural...just put an extra gob on her foot and she focused on that accessible spot while her body absorbed the rest of the oil. They were gone in a week. She also gets ear infections. I put a tiny bit on the ridge of her ear and rubbed her ear just like I do with the medication she gets at the vet- GONE! ***I promise it's true****
I have very long, thick (straw) hair that I absolutely destroy with coloring, flat ironing, etc. I've been drenching it in this about 2x a week and sleeping in a shower cap. When I rinse my hair off in the morning, it's soft. I rub it on my feet and put socks on every am; SOFT! I now scooped out a bunch and keep a seperate container next to my shower. It is now my after shower body oil. I DRENCH my body with it in the morning and I can honestly say that my skin (hello thighs and frightening sun damaged chest) is firmer and smoother. It's been maybe 2 months since I've been using this stuff, guys! I have so many other examples- just too much to list. What I do want everyone to know, and this is important to me, is that this brand really smells like coconut- which I love. I know with some brands, there is no smell.
I just really encourage anyone who is intrested in coconut or natural remedies to purchase this, along with one of the many books on the subject of uses of coconut. The cost of what it did to clear up my dog's hot spots alone (Medication would have been about $10 smells awful and she runs and hides- a whole drama scene) would have been half the price of this huge jug- not to mention the ear infection.
I was leery. I am now a confirmed fan and I have added it to my Top 5 Favorites List. GIVE IT A SHOT and Good Luck.
