| It works and its cheap by AyAK 4 Stars November 13, 2009 I bought this product when I lost the tiny Nexcare lipsore bottle.
I have a coldsore that hurts SO much that I couldnt put medicated chapstick, wash it, nothing without it hurting. This was worse b/c when my lips would dry and I talked or yawn, the sore would split open more. Its painful that I didnt care for the price.
The nexcare one did do well to numb my sore but being smaller, I lost it.*and it was expensive* So I bought this one and I was kinda pleased. It did numb my lips too and it kinda added a coat over the sore.
All I do like abreva but its always sold out.
| | Works. Better, cheaper alternatives available by E. Neal 3 Stars September 18, 2009 Abreva helped me on several occasions. I think it is a good product. It does not work as well on my wife. Since my wife has more frequent (and severe) outbreaks than I do, we have done quite a bit of product testing. Here is what we found:
First, sun exposure is her #1 trigger for an outbreak. Lip balm with SPF 15 has SIGNIFICANTLY reduced the number of outbreaks. Chapped lips also trigger an outbreak, so a quality lip balm (other than Carmex) again works well.
Second, there is a product called Viroxyn that works better than Abreva. The active ingredient is .13% benzalkonium chloride. The same active ingredient is also found in Bactine. Viroxyn is $10 per dose, and generic versions of Bactine are very inexpensive. Both my wife and I have used Bactine for our last couple of outbreaks, and we believe we have found the next-best thing to a cure. If you have success with Abreva, then you know that catching the cold sore early in its development is key. Same goes for our Bactine treatment. At first tingle, we saturate a q-tip with Bactine and rub the spot firmly for about 2 minutes. Repeat 4-6 times the first day. We find that the growth stops quickly, and the remaining (tiny) sore heals in a couple of days. If we catch it fast enough, it doesn't even scab over. I am not a doctor, and I am not qualified to give medical advice. I am sharing my personal experience in hopes that you can also find a way to reduce the pain and embarrasment from cold sores. Always follow label instructions for OTC medications.
| | WORKS for HSV-II as well(genital)....and just as fast by Nubian (Baltimore, MARYLAND United States) 5 Stars August 12, 2009 Abreva also works as well/fast on genital herpes as well. Although not advertised as such(Can't figure out why it isn't), but I don't get cold sores on my lips. Never have. ONLY 'down below' & I'm female. It ALWAYS Starts with tingling usually 3-5 days after my monthly cycle. I can mark it on the calendar...every month. I just start applying a VERY SMALL amount, ONLY enough to cover the tingling area. Usually on the area around my viginal opening is where the sores start. By the 2-3day, there are hardly any sores & what tries to form are already starting to heal.
This from someone who has NOT been sexually active in several years, LITERALLY!!!(OKAY, close your mouth!!!), I just don't have a man right now & I don't go the other way!!!!.
BUT I used to get Valtrex pills, at $35/mth EVERY MONTH!!!. This is WAY, way cheaper in regard to the daily pills, not to mention the $30 co-pay doctor visit just to GET the prescription.
ABREVA, Could you at least consider making a 10 or 12oz tube ??!!!! PLEASE..
| | Not sure it helps by lorelai (US) 2 Stars June 05, 2009 I'm not sure Abreva did much for my fever blister. I recently read reviews here for a product that contained benzalkonium chloride 0.13% and benzocaine. I couldn't find it in the stores but found TANAC in my medicine cabinet. It has similar ingredients (0.12%). The benzocaine numbs it. It is a great product but hard to find now. Amazon carries it at the best price.
| | Abreva by H. Ho 4 Stars June 04, 2009 This product is good for cold sores. I ended up only needing a small amount to heal my coldsore. The only problem is the tube is extremely small so hard to keep track of.
