Yes, vitamin A can be toxic, but not in Carotene form. And as for not being needed, there's a simple text. If you have small bumps, usually found on your upper arms, those are hyperkeratosis, a sign of vitamin A deficiency. If you have them, you need vitamin A.

This is in response to Jim's deceitful review. He says that too much Vit. A can be toxic which is true, but that is EXACTLY the reason why you want Beta Carotene, because that is non-toxic even in large doses. That's because B-Carotene gets converted to Vit. A slowly and only as much as the body needs.
