CUSTOMER REVIEWS (Average Customer Rating: 4.0 based on 40 reviews)
| Mabis steam inhaler by bright shiny things (St. Louis Park, MN) 5 Stars February 15, 2010 I've had this about 14 months now, and it's been a wonderful product to use. Before I had this I used a vicks one, which was not as nice, ran hotter and was much more difficult to just sit and relax while using.
First, I have asthma and ongoing sinus issues. With this inhaler, I have been able to reduce my inhaled asthma medicine by about 95%, which is an amazing benefit for me! I use it for about 5 minutes every morning, and usually again in the afternoon. While this might sound like a lot, the medicine I was taking has very serious side effects and it's made my life better to not take it. It's also been great when I get a cold, it really opens things up and thins out the goo.
There have been a few issues- I never used the purple mask, it stunk of VOCs and it works well without it. I actually feel that one shouldn't breathe steam at super-hot temps, it can damage the villi in your lungs the same as smoking does and those are the bits that help to clean out your lungs. I just hold my face back an inch or so, and it's perfect. After about a year, I broke the tab button in front, it was the spot I always held it at and I kind of blame myself as it wasn't designed for that. It's not a big deal, I just have to remember to hold it by the base now.
I have read other people state they had bad experiences putting essential oils in the thing. It's not designed well for that, they definitely didn't look into the fact that many EOs will dissolve plastic. Don't put them, even a few drops into the chamber, either- you may just wreck the thing completely. It is what it is, just ignore that idea and look for the steam.
One thing I do put in with the water is sea salt, which helps make it steam more and at a slightly lower temp. Also if any gets inhaled it's really good for your lungs!
I know, it's not perfect- but I'm giving it 5 as it has achieved a LOT for a moderate price, even if they didn't achieve every design goal they had. I'm very glad I bought this!
| | Works well by Mary Katherine Saueda (Indianapolis, IN) 5 Stars October 29, 2009 This product does work well, the steam is a little hotter than I thought it would be, but clears the sinuses.
| | I feel amazing! by AK (Somerville, MA) 4 Stars August 22, 2009 After my Mabis Steam Inhaler arrived I put off trying it for several weeks due to laziness (all those parts to wash and I didn't have a good place to set it up). I'm sorry I waited! It's terribly hot & humid so I've been using my a/c with no humidifier which has dried me out and made it impossible for my sinuses to drain. I just spent 5 minutes with the inhaler and I feel like a new woman. I had been feeling like someone was sitting on my chest but now I am breathing more freely. The Mabis produces a really fine mist. It gets hot but I was able to keep my face in the mask most of the time. The the mask is sturdy and I could put my weight on it. I'm giving it 4 stars because it's pretty loud. Keep a box of tissues next to you. You'll need it! Bonus: it's fashionably purple.
I purchased the Vicks Personal Steam Inhaler last year because it was so much cheaper, but the steam is too hot for me to keep my face in the hood. I have to hover above it and it's uncomfortable holding my head up. The hood is floppy and can't support weight even if you can stay on it. The Mabis is the superior steam inhaler. I'm in love. I may have to order a second one for work.
Make sure to comparison shop. I managed to find it for $39.99 + $6.27 shipping, but the current prices on Amazon range from $41.95 ($8.00 shipping) to $99.22 ($12.95 shipping)! Calculate the shipping cost. You may find that one with a higher price has cheaper shipping, making the total lower than one with a cheaper price.
| | Steam Relief by Lou (Florida, USA) 5 Stars June 01, 2009 My throat and lungs are prone to illness in dry, cold climates. Whenever I feel the dryness coming on, I use my steam inhaler. This little product provides relief and benefit as it creates steam in a minute which can easily be inhaled. You feel the relief instantly. I've had this steam inhaler for a year now, it's simple to use, reliable (sporadic use), and relatively easy to clean.
| | Good only while it lasted by C. Mondragon (Portland, OR) 1 Stars April 10, 2009 The plastic casing cracked in several plasces by the time I used it a dozen times. Once the plastic tab that locks the upper & lower halves to each other broke, I could only use it while carefully holding it together. After doing that a couple of times, I decided the risk of getting burned wasn't worht the benefit.
But it did work wonders...while it lasted.
