Doesn't work with Direct TV by B. Zylstra (California)  2 Stars

I bought this remote for my aged in-laws who have difficulty in using their Direct TV remote because the buttons are so small. Unfortunately it did not work. Codes are provided to program Direct TV boxes, but they would not work either. I called Direct TV for support; they stated that only remotes with Direct TV logos will work for their boxes.
Otherwise, I think this product met our expectations. It worked fine with their RCA TV.

Let's face it - if you're looking at this product, you have someone with special needs (most likely vision). The buttons are big, they light up for easy use in a dim room and are not hard to learn. Yes, it's big and a little clumsy, but that's exactly what it sells itself as. If you're tech savvy and can see and handle buttons the size of a grain of rice on those $150 all-in-one remotes, then you don't need this item. But for seniors or someone visually impaired, this works great. It might not be compatible with EVERY product on the market, but - hey - this thing is only twenty bucks! I bought this for my dad and it's great. He used to have 4 remotes so he knew which component he was controlling depending on the remote in hand. All he had to learn with an all-in-one: EVERY time you pick it up you have to tell it which component you're trying to talk to. (Obvious to the under 30 generation, but not so to us older folks!) But he quickly learned it is ALWAYS a 2 button operation; ie
"TV"/"ON"
(or)
"VCR"/"PLAY"
(or)
"CABLE"/"VOLUME UP"
etc...
For the price, I bought two and keep one in back-up. After not using all the other remotes for a year or two, who wants to relearn THAT all over again?!

Although this is large and doesn't get lost, the functions are limited. We have a vcr/dvd recorder combo that it can't handle. Better for the techno challenged as a basic remote.

if your mom is having trouble with the remote, it might not just be because she can't read/see the buttons. this device obviously eliminates those problems, very nicely.
what it doesn't do is teach a senior citizen how to use a remote for multiple devices. probably nothing can, at this rate. (and i say that having been a professional IT trainer and documentation expert for almost 20 years!)
it's not the item's fault, although the layout of the buttons isn't great. i tried to use the item myself, but found it so huge and awkward to hold, i actually just gave up and freecycled it to a neighbor!
