I ordered one of these about one year ago because I did not want my puppies to ever get distemper or viral infections. Since the product is sold over the counter, my expectation was that it would, in fact, come with some effective directions on how to use it and when to use it. The following shows what you get for your order.
I learned from the little label on the bottle - and ALL I got was the little bottle - that there was no gluten mixed into 20g worth of little granules and that there were no artificial colors or preservatives used. But you do get some lactose and 2 weeds commonly found in my backyard: echinacea purpurea (Eastern purple coneflower) and bryonia (Briony, Bryonie, Bryony).
There is NO EVIDENCE, anywhere provided that this remedy is, in fact, effective. I would NOT risk my dog's life by experimenting with some herbal remedy if my dog got sick.
The main ingredient seems to be 'Distemperinum C-30' (snake oil?) but it's not said in what quantity or concentration. A Google search shows little information on what this might be and, it seems, all top hits were originating from the makers of this product or from fellow homeopathic supporters. I saw no hard data showing how or why this ingredient would, in fact, 'immunize' the dog against a virus. We learn that everything is manufactured according to 'the highest pharmaceutical standards', whatever that means and that the ingredients were 'especially formulated' by a Registered Clinical... PSYCHOLOGIST(?).
The recommended dosage is using the 'pinch' as the unit of measure - one pinch for small dogs, 2 pinches for large dogs. Research shows that the pinch is usually 1/2 gram so one bottle gets you 40 pinches.
The recommended treatment consists of administering one/two pinches by 'sprinkling' them into the dog's mouth HOURLY until the symptoms go away, then keep sprinkling 3 times per day, daily, for the next 21 days. If you have a large dog, this would add up to... 4-5 bottles? And it's doubtful that the treatment is, in fact, effective to any measurable degree.
Speaking for myself, I would not trust my dogs' health with this product. The moment I detect distemper in them, I am on my way to the vet because, when it comes to a viral infection, I trust a vet more than I do a clinical psychologist. As for the $40 I spent on this little bottle... you win some, you lose some. In this case, I lost.
