Good sound, but a couple of drawbacks by R. B. Anderson (Minnesota) 4 Stars
November 06, 2009
I bought a Prestige Medical Clinical Cardiology stethoscope last year as a student nurse, after my Littmann Lightweight grew legs. I quickly stopped caring about losing my previous scope, because I found auscultation much easier with this one. It's not much heavier than my old one, as comfortable to the ears, and volume and clarity are both very good. I could hear more with the diaphragm, and WAY more with the bell; I went from barely being able to find an apical pulse, to finding murmurs that were not even documented! Also, the pediatric diaphragm delivered sound superior to what I heard with the pediatric scopes floating around the unit where I did that clinical ...and in Minnesota winters, pediatric units are full of respiratory junk; you listen to a lot of little patients' lung sounds, and it's good to use the pediatric diaphragm to distinguish which sounds are coming from which lobes. Two complaints, though: First, the tubing is pretty short. This sometimes forces me to get closer to patients than I really want to be. Second, the pediatric diaphragm - though it's a good one - is interchangeable with the bell, not the adult diaphragm. Dumb design! It's easy to change between bell & pediatric diaphragm, but still inconvenient to do it in the middle of an assessment, especially if you're in a hurry (who isn't?), and not having the bell for pediatric heart sounds is a significant limitation. I wish I could change between adult & pediatric diaphragms, and always keep the bell! Then, it would be a five-star stethoscope. Still, most scopes I've seen don't even have the option of a pediatric diaphragm. Besides, sound quality is really the main consideration, and I'm very happy with it.
