load the AAA battery that comes with it. Put your finger in it an get your readings. No on or off buttons. Just gives reading with finger in and turns off by itself. Large letters which were easy to read. Did not try reading it in bright direct sunlight but expect it will be same as any LCD screen. Family member I bought it for is on oxygen. Readings changed when he was on and off the oxygen and the readings were the same as a professional unit we compared it against.
For mountain climbers, the accompanying instructions for use say that this model is only accurate up to 14,000 feet. Did see that some of their other models are good to beyond Everest and those models are recommended for high altitude mountain climbing.
The rest of the family had fun checking their oxygen saturation too while holding their breath or exercising heavily, which was fun amusement for an hour

I work in a world renowned hospital. I purchased this pulse oximiter to carry when I do rounds in step down units. This unit would be much less troublesome than hooking patients up to hospital monitoring equipment. This first day I got delivery, I took it to work with me. I was deeply disappointed in the accuracy of the unit. The Nonin pulse oximiter registered a SpO2 of 82, so I hooked the patient up to the hospital monitor, it read 97. I tried it on a total of fifteen patients with the same sad results. If I had not already written my name on it with magic marker, I would be returning it for a refund.
