| how to make dust separator work by Duane Reinsel (Limestone Pa. USA) 4 Stars January 27, 2006 Mine did not fit the top of the bucket ,so I put the lid on and it fit nice and tight. I cut the lid , left a 1/12 inch lip around the top. works perfect now thanks FDR
| | Works great for me! by C. M. Carroll (Florida) 5 Stars December 19, 2005 I like it, received as Xmas present three years ago. Fits the top of all my 5gal plastic buckets. Ports fit all my misc collection of 2-1/2inch hoses and adaptors. Eliminates the heavy clean-up mess from my saw. Much easier to dump and clean than my wet-dry vac. Vac filters and dust bags last longer. A great start towards a more complete dust collection system.
It is a loose fit attachment, not a 'snap in place' gadget. It is easier to use with a short bungee stretched across the top to hold it on the top of the bucket. Hose ends go in about an inch. If I'm concerned about them pulling out, I use a band clamp on the end.
It also fits and works well with a small, 10gal shipping barrel. "It's a shiny thing, and I like it."
| | does not fit as advertised by Woodcraft by bayareakirk (Bay Area, CA) 1 Stars January 05, 2005 I give it a star for price as I purchased on sale at a local Woodcraft store for $16. However, I will be returning it. Woodcraft's website says this fits 2-1/2" shop vac hoses. Wrong. A standard 2-1/2" vacuum hose is too small to fit over the connector and too large to fit inside it. In fact, they are similar diameters. ONly the fact that the cyclone's connectors are a thicker plastic than the vacuum hose, make them somewhat different diameters both inside and out. I do not want to take time to force fit or search out adapters to make the connections work. It is also true the lid fits loosely on 5-gallon buckets and you would also need to rig a way to strengthen the fit so dust did not escape and so the lid did not fall off when hoses are moved or the bucket bumped. A total dud in my opinion.
| | poor construction by Michael and Leslie Richards (Albuquerque, New Mexico United States) 2 Stars May 31, 2004 Ok, I haven't even used this prouduct yet, but I'm already disappointed in it. First and foremost, it's not cut to the right sizes. The fit over the top of four different Home Depot 5 gallon buckets is loose at best. The hose ports are also sized incorrectly, and the standard connectors don't 'grab' at all. In fact, just to see what would happen, I tried a 2 1/2" extension wand in one of the openings and it sank in almost 3" before it tightened up in the hole. I'd imagine that any control this thing is supposed to have over the airflow in the bucket would be destroyed by that big a change in the postion of the inlets. This lid also isn't made of the typical shop-vac type high-impact ABS, but rather a very brittle, shiny plastic that probably won't take any rough knocks in the shop if you should drop something on it. I'm going to try to bungie the lid down to a bucket to keep it tight, and cut up a few hoses and see if I can make them snug up in the ports. If it works, I'll post an addition to this write-up explaining how I did it. For now, beware. Even if you get this thing to work, it'll be with some scratch building and home rigging.
| | Ok, but needs a little something... 4 Stars February 19, 2004 It's a good idea and works fairly well. Would not fit snug on the pails I had but it did fit well on the cover of the pail so I left the cover on the pail and cut out the inside of the cover with a jigsaw. Once the pail was approximately 1/2 to 3/4 full the chips and dust start to go into the shop vac. The suction loss seemed to be minimal. With the hoses positioned correctly, the separator and pail stayed put but they needed to be held down with something when I went to vaccum the floor otherwise they'd just topple over. All in all it's a decent product but pricey considering that it does not fit snug on a standard size pail or the hoses I used with my craftsman shop vac. Maybe I should have given it three stars...?
