I had read about products like this but found it hard to find. My house is located on very clayey soils in central Texas. Consequently, my house is subject to movement due to variation in soil moisture in the clayey soil. The common remedy is to maintain a steady soil moisture by surrounding the house with a soaker hose set on a timer. My problem has been lack of info. on the "level" of my the house. The Water hose level has been critical in my ability to diagnose why my front door was sticking and prompted me to water more frequently on the side of the house where I have a large tree and other large plants sucking the moisture out of the soil. The hose level helped me see that I had a one inch drop of the foundation on that side of the house due to dewatered shrinking clay. I Could not have determined this without either securing some fancy leveling instruments or using this product. Very valuable, I recommmend to every body on clayey soils with high shrink swell potential.

I used this setup to excavate and set up forms for a series of concrete pads that covered an area of 22x46 feet. What they are selling here is two pieces of clear tubing, caps for the tubing, and a valve on one end to keep the water from escaping. It works. However you do need to keep the level of water on the reference end at the same point. I find renting an auto leveling rotating laser to be much faster when the job requires making multiple measurements, as in establishing a level plane. But the technical simplicity and accuracy of utilizing water levels is unmatched. I think next time I'll try a water level utilizing a reservoir like the one talked about on this link: [..]

I needed to mark walls about 18' apart for construction of a counter. Aside from the expense I suspected that a laser product would introduce too much error. This product worked perfectly. The most difficult problem encountered was removing bubbles from the water in the hose which was longer than it needed to be.
