The perfect dimmer switch by M. L Lamendola (Merriam, KS USA) 5 Stars
May 12, 2007
I have replaced other types of dimmers with this particular model. I like its quiet operation and the fact that it doesn't require a special wall plate (very important where there's an existing dual plate, such as a dimmer next to a fan switch). This switch allows you to disassemble things and use just the switch itself (with handle). As a Master Electrician and an electrical engineer, I am very particular about the components I select for any electrical project. This switch is my top choice for dimming switches, unless I am installing a remote control system. The particular installation for which I bought this switch had used a rotary dimmer. That rotary required you to push in to shut off or turn on the light. This created an annoyingly loud click (which wakes people in other rooms, thus defeating one reason for using a dimmer in the first place). The rotary switch also wasn't easy to push in. Rather than just slap or swipe the switch on your way out of the room, you had to stand there and push it just right. Not acceptable! Thus I replaced it with this particular switch, which has always peformed flawlessly. The local hardware store stopped carrying this replacement sliding switch in ivory (it was available in white only). And Home Depot didn't have it. I checked a couple of other places, and then thought maybe Amazon would have it. Sure enough, Amazon did! What I'd really like to see is the switch sold without the backplate assembly (which I always throw away, and which isn't needed for a new installation if you install a standard switchplate). The only difference between the white and ivory is that little switch handle. Rather than have a product for which you throw away a large plastic assembly, I'd rather have a product for which you throw away just a little plastic handle (keeping the ivory or white one, depending on your color scheme).
