William Bounds, Ltd. has spent more than 40 years making mills and shakers for pepper and salt from the simple and casual, to the highly decorated. The diminutive stainless steel Rook pepper mill and salt shaker set falls somewhere in the middle. Named after the rook chess piece, they stand 4 inches tall and sport a soft, brushed-steel finish that produces a modern bistro look. Stainless steel construction and their portable size make them ideal for picnics or camping. The pepper mill crushes peppercorns using a steel-and-ceramic mechanism patented by William Bounds. Crushing rather than grinding ensures better flavor and more consistent size. The grind is adjusted turning the small top knob marked with the letter "P"--clockwise for coarse and counterclockwise for a finer grind. The salt shaker has a small white toggle that opens and closes the shaker holes. As long as the holes are closed when not in use, moisture cannot get in and cause salt to clump. The Rook salt shaker and pepper mill stand 4 inches tall and 1-3/4 inches across at their widest point. They come with an order form for sea salt and peppercorns. I wanted a mill and shaker set that was brushed stainless but not heavy and this is it. Classy looking, light and well made, they go very well with my kitchen setting and are easy to handle. They even came with sea salt and peppercorns....how nice!

These are not worth the money. Mine have been sitting in a corner useless for months--the pepper mill broke before it was a year old, and the salt shaker developed green corrosion (yeah, like one of those el-cheapo rings that leaves your finger green) anywhere it came into contact with salt. I got tired of cleaning the crud out of it.
They say on the site they will replace them for $6.00, but I took that $6.00 to the local bargain outlet and got a set that, while not quite as stylish, were much better made.

Wow, the pepper mill barely works. I can only get very large chunks out of it, and it's impossible to refill. The salt shaker is just OK. If you want to pay less than $20, just go pick something up at Target for half the price. If you want something that works, get something else. I'm so disappointed!

I think these pieces look really cute but they are not terribly functional.
