CUSTOMER REVIEWS (Average Customer Rating: 4.0 based on 11 reviews)
| Very nice knife block by E. Loehr 5 Stars March 02, 2010 I bought this to go with my Forschner/Victorinox knives. It arrived without damage and looks and functions great.
| | Arrived damaged by sickoflibs (Colorado) 1 Stars February 20, 2010 Like a previous review, mine arrived with crack all the way down back side of block. Was not packaged very well in the box so I'm not sure if it is a quality control problem or enroute injury.
| | Not too impressed by J. Pobst (St. Louis, MO) 3 Stars January 08, 2010 Issues with the blocks I received:
The first one of these I ordered arrived with a crack above the kitchen shears slot between 2 of the bamboo-board-columns (for lack of better words) all the way down the back. I think the crack was large enough that you could slide a sheet of paper through it, but I didn't even take the block out of the plastic wrap since I intended to ship it back.
The second block also had a crack on the back above the kitchen shears slot, but this crack was only a couple inches at the bottom between two of the "bamboo-board-columns" and then another inch one column over above that. These cracks also weren't as wide as the crack on the first one. In addition to the cracks, this one also had a dent a few mm in diameter in the top left corner (by the honing rod slot). These are slight nuisances but are not so bothersome as the large crack in the first one. As such I plan to keep this one.
Slot widths:
(I won't make any garauntees on my accuracy)
5 slots are 2 1/8 in. wide
3 slots are 1 5/8 in. wide
5 slots are 1 3/16 in. wide
6 slots are 15/16 in. wide
1 slot is 3 15/16 in. wide
and the other 2 slots are the honing rod and kitchen shears slots
Issues with the block in general:
As mentioned by another reviewer, it would be nice if the slots were wider. I have the Ken Onion by Shun 7-Inch Santoku, and it only fits completely into the cleaver slot. This is frustrating because they could have easily made one of the five 2 1/8" slots another 1/8"-1/4" wider, and then it would have fit. If I end up getting a cleaver, I will probably take a power drill to the block so my Santoku fits in one of the other slots. the only other thing is that the honing rod slot is too close to the kitchen shears slot. A have the Shun Sharpening Steel and the Kershaw Taskmaster Shears, and they fight for the same space so that the shears must sit crooked. This isn't a big deal; it just doesn't look so nice. Since Kershaw and Shun are both made by KAI, I thought maybe they should fit better.(UPDATE: The kitchen shears do fit in fine if inserted with the bottle opener side facing right.)
With all that being said, it still basically does what block should do, and I don't expect it to fall apart.
| | Great Construction, Nice wide slots by H. Heinrich 5 Stars October 27, 2009 Was hesitant to purchase because of price tag, but after reading L.Arthur's review decided to go for it. Unless you have lots of standard size knives around, this is the knife block to get. We needed space for lots of paring and bread knives, and the bottom vertical slots hold them all! We upgraded from a smaller Henckle block in which we had slot width issues. This fixed all of our knife storage problems. Well worth the price for our purpose.
| | Great-Looking Knife Block! by R. D. Collins (Hermosa Beach, CA United States) 5 Stars April 07, 2009 I'm very happy with this knife block. It's very well made, sturdy, and great looking. I especially like that all the slots (except the 6 steak knife slots in the very front) are horizontal, which is easier on the edges.
I have more than a dozen kitchen knives, including a very large 270mm Hattori Gyuto, a 240mm Hattori Gyuto, a 170mm Hattori Santoku, an 8-inch and a 6-inch Wusthof Chef's Knife, a Dexter Russell Chinese Cleaver, a 150mm and a 135mm Hattori Petty knife, two Wusthof paring knives, and a 9" Wusthof Bread Knife, plus six Laguiole steak knives. All are in the block, along with my ceramic sharpening rod and a pair of Kershaw Shears.
The slots were wide enough for all of my knives except one. After filling all the other slots, I had one knife left over, the Wusthof 6-inch Chef's Knife. It's 1-9/16 inches wide at the hilt, but the last remaining slot was only 1-1/2 inches wide. That problems was very easily resolved with a keyhole saw, which I used to slightly widen the top portion of the slot until my knife fit in it. Since the actual cut is entirely within the slot, there's no visible damage.
A great block for the money, and a great way to store your good kitchen cutlery!
