The right baby laxative for you? by Nurse Dawn (Rochester, MN USA) 5 Stars

My infant is slow to drink water and her breast milk consumption is down with the introduction of 'solid' foods. Hello constipation! We've tried everything conventional, prunes, glycerine suppositories (which are fantastic for stimulating pooping, but shouldn't be used that often), you name it. In the ER, we use Sorbitol syrup and it totally works! Because it's poorly absorbed by the GI tract and what is absorbed is converted by the liver to fructose, I feel comfortable using it on my infant. Do your own research and use your best judgement, it is an artificial substance. I gave my infant a .8 mL dropper full (one infant's Tylenol dropper) and boy howdy did she poop! Now when she's been a few days and isn't sleeping well, we try the glycerine, oral and rectal, then on to Sorbitol. Good luck!
