Use them properly and they work very well by Toni (Tallahassee FL) 5 Stars

Green bags work well if used properly. They don't work at all if you deviate from directions. You can't mix different produce in the same bag. You have to put them in dry and keep them dry. I have found that putting a paper towel in the bag helps. You need to press all the air out of the bag that you can without crushing the product. Things I have found they work well for include potatoes, tomatoes, peppers. For carrots, celery and onions I use the freshness eggs instead. I just toss one in the vegetable bin with them, and they do stay fresher longer. I did not find them overly helpful with bananas, but my mother in law uses them for bananas all the time. She puts green bananas in the bag and takes them out one at a time to ripen. I think the color change in the bags that someone else noted is a cue that the bags are losing their effectiveness. I know the Glad green bags I bought lost their green much faster than Debbie Myer bags, but they were more convenient and easy to use with the zipper. Only one size in them though. I use green bags and vacuum seal bags both. Each work better for some products than the other. For example, berries seem to do better vacuum packed in a container than they do in green bags. If you use fresh produce alot, and on a daily basis, they really help save money. If you put produce in them and forget it for a week or two, especially produce with a high moisture content, they don't work so well.

Poor quality by Christophe A. Goodwin (Charlotte, NC) 2 Stars

For many years, I purchased the Evert-Fresh Green Bags. They were a sturdier bag, and the lettuces, greens, carrots, peppers kept excellent for up to three weeks. Their site now refers you to Debbie Meyer Green Bags. I tried Meyer's bags. Produce does not last nearly as long as in the Evert, and DO NOT put your berries or bananas into these bags. [...]. Not pretty and not edible. They claim these bags are re-usable up to 8 to 10 times. Well, not on my planet. I'm lucky to be able to reuse them a second time.

Follow the Directions by W. Carroll 5 Stars

I'm wondering if those who've had poor results with the Green bag are following the directions. It seems the issue is moisture and, if you read the directions, you're not to close the bag tightly. This would, I should think allow the moisture out. I keep the bags loose and have had great results. I also LOVE the bread bags. Now, these you DO close tightly. We had cinnamon buns three days after purchase that were as soft and fresh as they day they were baked.

Works for me! by G. White (Pensacola, FL) 5 Stars

I too don''t understand all the negatives for the green bags. I have not tried the bags on bananas, because bananas don't last long around our house anyway! But bagged salad greens last one week or more past the 'sell by' date. And tomatoes last several days (not in the fridge, though!) We have noticed a substantial difference in keeping fresh strawberries in the green bags. I use them for asparagus and green beans also and they will keep for a couple of weeks in the crisper drawer. I think maybe people are not using them correctly (do not twist shut, but fold over loosely), or else they have unreasonable expectations on how long food will keep. I would recommend them.

Pleasantly surprised- works well by A. Whitney (Silicon Valley, CA USA) 4 Stars

As a single person who is trying to eat healthier, I find that when I buy vegetables, I often can't eat all of the vegetables before they spoil. So, I bought the green bags in hopes that they would help me extend the time that I had to eat them. Overall, the bags work well. Some tips: * Don't put wet veggies in the bag. These help with the gases that the veggies produce, but if you put wet items in the bag, you are only encouraging spoilage and not doing yourself any favors * Pay attention to the quality of the food that you place in the bags-- if you live in an area that has a difficult time getting fresh veggies/produce, you may be putting in product that has already been on a plane, a boat, a train and a semi for a while. I have found that the fresher the food, the longer they keep. One other thing to keep in mind is that we are so accustomed to food that can stay on the shelf forever that we often forget that fresh food spoils because it lacks all the chemicals and high-tech packaging that keeps packaged foods "shelf-stable." I have seen several negative reviews that are knocking the bags because they only extended the life of the food 3-5 days. In reality, 3-5 days is a great extension. That is probably more of a comment on a family's eating habits rather than the bag's effectiveness. I recommend the bags and will continue to buy them.

Peak Fresh Re-Usable Produce Bags, Set of 10

Peak Fresh Re-Usable Produce Bags, Set of 10
by Harold Import Company, Inc.

Peak Fresh produce bags remove ethylene gas to prolong the life and freshness of produce, more than doubling the life expectancy of refrigerated fruits and vegetables. Most fruit and vegetables release ethylene gas after harvest. Exposure to the gas accelerates aging in fruit and vegetables (the expression one bad apple spoils the barrel comes from this process). Unlike ordinary plastic bags, Peak Fresh produce bags breathe so that damaging gases produced by the fresh produce are removed. ...
