By the time these symptoms become noticeable, serious damage may have occurred. Only when 75% of nephrons are no longer functional can clinical and biochemical signs of CKD be detected. While chronic kidney disease is incurable, adding Epakitin to the diet enables you to protect the renal function of dogs and cats better than ever. It is possible to slow down the auto-destructive cycle of CKD and increase life expectancy by limiting the increase of phosphatemia, with the help of a low phosphorus diet and/or by adding a phosphate binder to the diet. Epakitin is a chitosan-based nutritional supplement that is both a phosphate binder and uremic reducer. Seems to be identical to what I bought from the vet, except much cheaper. As far as efficacy, it's hard to rate. I don't have a control subject.

Epakitin for Dogs and Cats (150 gm) I was thrilled to find this company. The product came swiftly and was very fresh with an expiration date of 2/11. Plus it saved me $25 over the Vet price. My cat was put on this 3 years ago when he had kidney problems. I use it every day in his food. It restored his kidney functions to normal and his blood test have come back perfect for the last 2 years.

We've recently starting using Epakitin for our cat, Tucker, who has been diagnosed with renal failure. He's also getting Ringer solution IV's every other day. Along with the Epakitin we're seeing some improvement in his energy and alertness. We'll continue to do everything we can for Tucker.

We wish we had this in 2005 when our 16 year old kitty Cleo passed away from CRF. When her sister Shorty was diagnosed in Oct. 2005, we were told she might have a month or might have a year. Well, she made it to age 19 1/2 in Sept. 2008 (3 years later!) and we're sure that Epakitin is the reason. We added the Azodyl last year when we became aware of it, so that may have helped too. We mixed both in with grain-free Wellness brand food to reduce phosphorus and toxin buildup (the Hills K/D prescription food has bad ingredients, and my cats didn't like it). And NO dry food, big no-no! To the reviewer who said it made their pet eat less (my sincere sympathy) unfortunately poor appetite and nausea are some of the devastating side effects of later stage kidney failure. There are prescription supplement solutions to increase appetite. Many vets also recommend 1/4 Pepcid. All of that helps. CRF can cause very rapid heartbreaking decline, and I wouldn't blame Epakitin. Epakitin is the safest way to avoid toxic phosphorus buildup (manifest by buckled back legs).Good luck, and bless your sweet pootie or woozle.
