EDITORIAL REVIEWS | Product Description BENEFICIAL NEMATODES: These microscopic insects will seek out and destroy over 230 kinds of soil dwelling and wood boring insects, including cutworms, armyworms, rootworms, weevils, grubs, fungus gnat larvae, and many more. They are completely safe for people, pets, and the environment, and are compatible with other beneficial insects. Beneficial nematodes are shipped live in the box and may be mixed directly into the soil and are applied with a sprayer.
USE: Beneficial Nematodes (BN) attack more than 230 kinds of soil dwelling and wood boring pests, such as flea larvae, white grubs, cutworms, corn root worms, strawberry weevils, gypsy moth larvae, cabbage root maggots, fungus gnat larvae, and many more.
RELEASE: BN may be released by spraying with water, mixing with mulch and applying directly to the soil or potting mix, or injecting into burrows. They may be used any time of year, as long as the ground is not frozen. Do not release in direct sunlight, as this will kill them. See directions for details.
COVERAGE: Will cover up to 2,000 square feet, but faster results are obtained with higher concentrations, covering only 200 square feet.
GENERAL INFORMATION: Beneficial Nematodes (Steinernema feltiae) are microscopic in size and cannot be seen with the naked eye. But the 7 million active units in each pint container will hunt down, penetrate, and kill most soil dwelling pests. BN will attack over wintering adult insects, pupae, diapausing larvae, and grubs when they are in the soil, bark, or even ground litter. BN do not affect humans, animals, or plants. They are completely compatible with beneficial insects such as ladybugs, lacewings, and praying mantids and do not harm earthworms. |

| saved my fruit trees, and eliminated biting midges (no see ums) by Kelly R. Forrester (Charlotte, NC) 5 Stars October 08, 2009 This product worked wonders! I had a serious problem in the yard with biting midges (no see ums), and my young fruit trees were beginning to show signs of root borer infestation. One container of the benefical nematodes, and now I can work in the yard without being attacked - and my fruit trees have perked up.
| | The only thing that works! by sugastar01 (Salt Lake City, UT) 5 Stars September 26, 2009 For a year I had tried everything to get rid of the fungus gnats in my houseplant soil. I had purchased a bag of soil that was infested with the larvae, and they took over ALL of my plants, killing a number of them. They were out of control. Pesticides and fumigation would only kill the adults, and in another week I'd be right back where I started. Finally I did some research on the internet and read that nematodes were one of the best means of controlling fungus gnat larvae long term, but none of the local garden centers carried them. Hirt's was the only place I could find that carried Scanmask. The product arrived promptly and has worked beautifully! No more bugs!
It kinda creeped me out at first to think of putting worms in the soil of my house plants, but they are microscopic and not harmful to people or pets. Besides, I'd rather have microscopic worms than fungus gnats flying in my face all day.
There were a few things I wish the package instructions would have included: How to make up a smaller batch if you are only using part of the carton (it says it will treat 1050 4" pots!) and how much of the mix to put in each pot. I think I over did it, because it didn't go nearly that far, but it worked either way so I'm happy.
I tell everyone I know that has houseplants and has noticed little bugs that look like fruit flies flying around to use this product. It is the only thing that works!
| | Terrible customer service and product by G. Braddish (New England) 1 Stars September 14, 2009 I purchased these to rid my lawn of grubs. When they arrived in a large canister I was a little surprised since nematodes I've purchased before came in a plastic envelope on a small sponge. When I opened the canister it was filled with a stone like substance that act as the medium. I followed the directions and filled my pump sprayer. Unfortunately the medium residue clogged the sprayer so often that I couldn't apply the nematodes effectively. I tried another pump sprayer and the same thing happened. I was only able to properly spray 20-25% of the solution.
When I contacted Hirt's Gardens, Alan Hirt responded by asking what brand and model sprayers, how much water I used, exactly what I did, etc. It was like getting the third degree. I explained I followed the directions on the box. After a few weeks I received an email from Mr. Hirt that he contacted the owner of Scanmask, Dr. Alan Pye, who he claims is the foremost authority on nematodes in the world and Dr. Pye says, "that a pump spayer is not recommended for nematodes." Well this doesn't help after the fact when the description on this site and the side of the box gives directions for pressure or hand pump sprayers.
I have given Mr. Hirt an opportunity to make this better but he refused. At no point has there been a solution suggested, an offer to resolve my problem, etc. Instead I'm told that I'm wrong and shouldn't have used a pump sprayer, even though it's in the directions.
I'm very disappointed and will never consider Hirt's again for a purchase.
| | Will Apply Every Year to My Vegetable Garden by Karen K. Kirchner (Cleveland, OH USA) 5 Stars August 04, 2009 The last 3 years, I have had a terrible time with all sorts of non-beneficial insects in the garden. Last year, I lost all of my cucumber plants to striped cucumber beetles and the wilt disease that they brought to my cucumbers. There were more squash bugs than I knew what to do with and nothing seemed to help. I tried to get rid of the cuke beetles with Neem among other organic methods, but they won the battle each year. This year, it's already July. My one cucumber plant is about 8 feet tall and no sign of any bad bugs yet.
I think I will buy and apply these every year to my garden. They were easy to use and so far, so good. Highly recommend trying them yourself.
| | Hard to tell. by Tonya Harmon 3 Stars June 23, 2009 It is a little hard to rate this product as it is hard to tell if it is working or not. You cant see anything and since I have just done the application, I don't know how long it will be before I notice, or if I will ever notice if they are alive and working. The product arrived quickly and packaged well, but only time will tell, at least I hope it will.

| 1500 Live LadyBugs by Hirt's Gardens
favorite "good bug" ladybugs have been popular beneficial insects for the past 20 years. When released at sundown (because they don't fly at night), ladybugs eat aphids, mealy bugs, scale, leaf hoppers, and other destructive pests. And they keep on eating until the bad guys are gone, laying their own eggs in the process. When new pests arrive, fresh ladybugs will be waiting. You will love them because ladybugs really work, plus they will be doing something favorable for the environment....

| 200 Live Earth Worms by Hirt's Gardens
200 LIVE EARTH WORMS
Earthworms eat and burrow twenty-four hours a day! All of this tunneling aerates the soil (getting oxygen to the roots), allows for easier root growth, and improves water retention. They are a natural tie in for cold composting. Earthworms help keep the soil loose. Mother Nature doesn't own a spade! Earthworms consume ordinary soil and cast it back with more nutrients available to plants. These "castings" release their nutrients slowly and do not leach out with watering....
