| Can they cheapen the idea of love anymore? by ~Coffee~makes~life~better~ (Orlando, Florida) 1 Stars November 23, 2009 Okay, I love most british films, most romantic comedies, and find often something redeeming in the ones I don't. This movie is a huge disappointment. I was drawn in by the great actors, but I wonder what drew them in. This movie has weak story lines, mostly unlikeable characters and uses every opportunity to include foul language, sex and nudity it can. The effectual message? Love Actually is Cheap.
| | Love Actually Editorialized by pitbullpatti (Buckeye, AZ, USA) 3 Stars November 11, 2009 This movie is entertaining and gives enough laughs throughout to make it bearable, but it could have used a serious dose of editing as, besides being very predictable for the most part, it just rambled on and on until you couldn't care less about any of the characters.
| | Mixed Emotions by Susan Bock (Ontario) 2 Stars October 29, 2009 Hmmm. I am feeling like a voice in the wilderness. I like many things about this movie which shows different incarnations of love. What upset me is the portrayal of the schizophrenic brother of Laura Linney's character. In my opinion, he is an extreme case and the portrayal is scary. It perpetuates the stigma to the public and sends a message (so strong in visual media) of hopelessness to individuals suffering from mental illness and to their families as well, who already bear such a heavy burden. The writer could have portrayed this character as being out of the hospital, on the way to recovery, etc. It was just so disappointing, especially as so much of the film is well written.
| | A Perfectly Good Feel-Good Movie...for Christmas Time by ConcerningTarutarus 3 Stars October 24, 2009 I never got the chance or the desire to see "Love, Actually" despite the fact it's a pretty widely known movie. That changed recently when I saw a Thai film by the same director of Dorm. The movie, "Hormones", was said to be loosely influenced by "Love, Actually". Having said that, "Love, Actually" is a charming film. But it is not something I can see anybody watching at any time of the year other than Christmas. During the summer, leave it on the shelf because there is little to gain from the film other than feel-good sentiment that is often gained through calculated manipulation.
| | Five Stars Actually by Kregg Jorgenson (Seattle) 5 Stars October 19, 2009 What Hollywood and maybe its English counterpart can do best is entertain us and with Richard Curtis and LOVE ACTUALLY we get moviemaking at its best; good script, great dialogue, classic performances, and a tremendous sound track.
Is it a chick flick? At times, sure but it is also one a beer can bending, butt scratching, real guy can enjoy as well even if there are no explosions, chase scenes or zombies...ah, (sigh) zombies...
Yeah, well Bill Nighy is hilarious as the aging rock star looking for a comeback at any price and how he plays and pays it is good stuff.
This isn't a 'slice of life' movie but a 'slice of a better life' type movie and judging from the over 700 reviews here it is one that most viewers have enjoyed.
Me included.
