Slide rattling good by Bob Davis (Christchurch New Zealand) 3 Stars
May 15, 2001
This is Dave Hole's first album which came to light because he sent the album to US Guitar Player magazine and blew the reviewer away. Ten years on I find many tracks which are still great and many tracks now less than memorable. Dave's slide is still the highlight with none better than the title track 'Short fuse Blues'. Other feature tracks are 'Purple Haze', 'Albatross', 'Travelling riverside blues' and 'the sun is shining'. However, there are too many songs on which Dave's energy exceeds his talent. High energy blues/rock which is still worth a place in my collection.

Sometimes I wonder if Australian Dave Hole's slide virtuosity is too much of a good thing. Don't get me wrong; I own everything he's ever done, but sometimes his slide work is just so over the top that it makes your fillings rattle. Hole is just a monster on this, his first release, and on his subsequent albums he shows no sign of slowing down. And he tears it up live, too. Grab anything you can by this guy and find out what you've been missing.

I've heard all the blues artists. Some good, some not so good and a few are great...Dave Hole is great. If you love blues but still like to rock, this will blow you're mind. A must have, in my opinion, for any blues fan.

Working Overtime

Working Overtime
by Dave Hole

Even in a genre oversaturated with fast-jamming electric guitarists, this Australian singer-songwriter's improvisations are always original and occasionally revelatory. He's a surprisingly soulful singer, in a less-polished, B.B. King sort of way, and his constant solos never drown the focus of a catchy acoustic song like "Mean Old Airplane" or an electric stomper like "Stormy Seas." Ultimately, this 1993 CD is for guitar aficionados--Dave Hole's playing mimics his voice perfectly on the title...

Steel on Steel

Steel on Steel
by Dave Hole

After two decades of obscurity in the show-biz black hole of western Australia, singer-guitarist Dave Hole finally released his first U.S. album, Short Fuse Blues, in '92. He made his first U.S. tour in the fall of '93, and has now released his third album here, Steel on Steel. The title refers to Hole's trump card, his fast, flashy, steel-cylinder-on-steel-strings slide work. Over the course of his three albums, Hole's blues-rock sound has shifted its emphasis from blues to rock, and Steel on...

Outside Looking In

Outside Looking In
by Dave Hole

From the first skyrocket notes of Dave Hole's slide guitar, the Australian's sixth album for Alligator Records is a sonic thrill ride. It helps that few musical sounds are as exciting as steel pipe on steel strings--especially since Hole's skills as a singer and songwriter don't match his incendiary musicianship. And Hole's got an edge over almost every other slide guitarist; when he was learning the technique as a teen, he broke his pinky and switched the slide to his left index finger,...

Ticket to Chicago

Ticket to Chicago
by Dave Hole

Australian Dave Hole plays like a caffeinated Elmore James, zinging a steel slide over his fretboard with so much hard-edged energy that he's drawn the praise of not only blues listeners, but also fans like Metallica guitarist Kirk Hammett. This 1997 release is his first album recorded in Chicago, with the support of Windy City blues MVPs: keyboardist Tony Zamagni, bassist Johnny B. Gayden, drummer Ray Allison, and others. That's what Hole needed to anchor his performances, which in the past...

Rough Diamond

Rough Diamond

Dave Hole, an Australian artist, is well known for his guitar mastery. Since his recording debut fifteen years ago, Dave's records and live performances have drawn raves from countless international publications, and garnered legions of fans. "Nothing interferes with Hole's searing guitar when he is in full flight," said Rolling Stone magazine, while Guitar World added, "Hole produces solo upon blistering solo that is exhilaratingly relentless." His newest recording, "Rough Diamond,"...
