| watch out for the mp3 download by Eppy (middle earth) 3 Stars November 28, 2009 The MP3 download is not the advertised album. It is a completely different thunderstorm album. So beware. I tried to find a way to tell Amazon, but they make it difficult to find a way to do that.
| | Thunderstorm CD by Jane 4 Stars October 03, 2009 I have had a copy of this for a couple of years, but needed an original, so that's why the recent purchase. I have a CD player next to my bed, and play this every night to get to sleep. There are tropical bird calls, rain---first light rain, and then heavier. Then some thunder, and throughout the 50 minutes there is a variety of different storm sounds---waves, wind in the trees, thunder again, all very nicely mixed. I wish I could take this on vacations with me, I like it so much.
| | Great cd by S. B. KOLAND (Wisconsin) 5 Stars August 16, 2009 I love this cd, it relaxes me to hear the thunder and rain. I would tell anyone who has a problem with relaxing before bed, get this cd.
| | Great SACD, but not reality by T. Casey (Boston MA USA) 4 Stars May 29, 2009 I'm listening to this surround-sound SACD right now, but the wind at the beginning isn't real - it's white noise from a synth. It ain't real, but it's good.
This is a mix CD of a bunch of ambient sounds. It's very well done, and very relaxing, but if you're looking for a 100% natural recording like the Rykodisc series "A Day On Cape Cod", this ain't it.
Still, it's very, very good. The surround rain that starts at 8:00 sounds like the windows in my house are open. There seems to be a bit of bass missing from the thunderclaps in surround. This is usually due to incorrect bass management - I'm sure the audio CD layer sounds great. I have a feeling that the SACD is forcing the bass into the subwoofer output of my receiver. This won't matter if you have a subwoofer, but if you have two full-range front speakers like I do, you won't hear the deep bass. You can set up your receiver to send all the bass to the big front speakers instead of the subwoofer, but a couple of my SACDs - this one and Miles Davis's "Kind Of Blue" - don't seem to be able to work that way. It's a pity, because Mr. Gibson seems to have captured a bunch of really good thunderclaps. I just wish the room would rumble when they happen.
I recommend this highly, the only caveat being that it's not a flat recording of a single thunderstorm, and most of the SACD isn't full of thunder (of course, an hour of boom-boom thunder would probably be a bit much).
If Dan Gibson wants to respond, that'd be great. He did a really good job of making an ambient CD, but it doesn't quite cut it as a thunderstorm CD.
| | Great Thunderstorm with birds and frogs by Woflgang Largo (Olathe, KS United States) 4 Stars January 29, 2009 I really like this CD. You get varying thunder and rain instensity with birds and frogs mixed in at times. The only reason I didn't give it 5 stars is because of a strange noise that occurs a few times. It sounds like some electronic distortion or vibration. It only occurs a few times and of brief duration. I've gotten used to it and ignore it, enjoying the rest of the CD. If you like thunderstorms, I'd also recommend Thunderstorm by Echoes of Nature.
