Dark, Heavy, and Comprehensible by Nathan Metric 4 Stars
October 25, 2009
Cancer knows how to play Death Metal right. No humor, no kinkiness, and no ultra-technicality is added to riffs. Only darkness and brutality. The vocals are both gutteral and comprehensible. Though, they don't have any awe-inspiring subject matter, the combination of both comprehensibility and appropriateness in tone makes this album goosebump inducing. I minus 1 star because some of the riffs are tiresome and the versu/chorus riffs tend to be slowed down. Regardless, this album is dark, fast, and heavy. You must buy this.

AN EXCELLENT BRITISH DEATH METAL ALBUM!! FROM A VERY TALENTED BAND!! by Andrew Armstrong (Mechanicsburg PA) 5 Stars

I was recently going through some of My CD's and I came across this album: CANCER "DEATH SHALL RISE".It had been a very long time since I last heard this album so I decided to put the disc in and Crank up the volume and here is what I found:A fantastic Death Metal album that is really solid from start to finish. Produced by Scott Burns (CANNIBAL CORPSE and DEICIDE) this 2nd release from CANCER has an Excellent sound a very high production on the entire recording. The sound quality is absolutely crystal clear and not the least bit muddled. You can really hear each instument very well especially the drums and the double Bass pedals, and outside of the shredding guitars and vocals the Bass player can be heard very well too! With only 8 tracks this album seems to fly at a furious speed (but that is when the repeat button becomes extremely handy!!) CANCER as a Band overall have a tremendous amount of talent and if I could give an example of what they sound like it would most likely be a cross between the intricate writing, brutal vocals, and excellent solo's of: DEATH and the blinding precision and speed plus excellent "CRUNCH" rhythms of: the almighty SLAYER! Some of the major highlights from "DEATH SHALL RISE" are: track #1)"Hung, Drawn, and Quartered"(ABSOLUTELY BRUTAL LYRICS!), track #2)"Tasteless Incest"(Fantastic SLAYER style rhythms and My personal favorite track on the album!), track #4)"Death Shall Rise"(this track has a couple of really terrific guitar solos and some Jaw-Dropping double Bass work on the drums!! Great timing changes too!), track #7)"Corpse Fire", and track #8)"Internal Decay"(GREAT FINISHING TOUCH!).If You enjoy Your bands DARK,BRUTAL,AND REALLY HEAVY! then CANCER's "DEATH SHALL RISE" is an excellent album to add to Your collection!I also HIGHLY recommend this album if You enjoy listening to bands like: SLAYER,DEATH,CANNIBAL CORPSE,DEICIDE,and OBITUARY. I am really glad I took the time out to put this disc in and give it a listen! It's been a long time and I forgot what a great band CANCER was. I hope My review was helpful to You. Please check out My other reviews for more GREAT Thrash,Death, and Black Metal Bands!! LONG LIVE METAL FOREVER!!

Old school death metal at it's best!! by critico constructivo (PR) 5 Stars

I like "Death shall rise" slighty better than the "Gory end" and the other one. The John Walker's voice, in my opinion was one of the best voices in the genre on the early '90s and no talk about the genius James Murphy, you should hear the solo on "Hung, Drawn and Quartered" very melodic, and in "Back from the dead". Good album by an incredible band!!

BRUTAL SOPHMORE ASSUALT!!!! by Death Metal90 5 Stars

Cnacer's 2nd album is one heavy mother. The production is much thicker and fuller sounding than the previous debut To the Gory End. The band continues on the same path they started with To the Gory End. The addition of James Murphy on lead guitar is definitely a plus! Check out his awesome solo in the first track "Hung Drawn and Quartered". This has to be THE best Death Metal song to bang your head through a wall. For me the best songs along with Hung Drawn are "Tasteless Incest" "Death Shall Rise" and "Back from the Dead". But really all 8 songs are killer. This album was a great follow up to the debut. Although the production on this album is better, I still prefer To the Gory End because I like the songwriting more. Most people seem to like Death Shall Rise the best. All 3 Cancer albums are awesome but if I had to pick, Id choose To the Gory End. Good news for Cancer fans! Their website says that in '05 the first 3 albums will be remastered/resissued w/ bonus tracks!!! Hell yes! If you dont like Cancer, you are missing out big time
