Nice mix by D. Prieto (Bournemouth,UK) 4 Stars
January 23, 2005
Just bought this 2 days ago and pleasantly surprised, its a very good listen. Cheesy cover though - "warning! toxic UK big beat tracks included" - god its like '96 all over again. Best track by a mile is Open Up. When I saw Chems at Glastonbury 97 they played this awesome tune and I now Ive found it on here at last. I never realised it was their mix of Open Up, but as what they played live was without vocals I never knew. And yes it does fit in on this mix(dunno what that other reviewer is on about), theres nothing better than some hard 4/4 beat and 303s after all those breaks. Turn it up!

Some Hard-driven stuff! by Lil' Rowlands (Detroit Lakes, MN) 5 Stars

You'll have to forgive me because I do not know much about the world of British Electronica except for The Chemical Brothers and Underworld. From what I have heard on this compilation CD, I am impressed. I read that The Chemical Brothers remix of 'Jailbird' from Primal Scream became highly acclaimed before The Chem. Bros. actually started off their career with 'Exit Planet Dust' in 1995. My other personal favorites were 'Don't Stop', 'Uncivilized World', & 'Get On [Chemical Brothers Mix]' by Swordfish. Like I said, don't much about this world, but I loved what I heard, if you find this CD new or USED, get it! That's my review, thanks!

A Healthy Dose of Big Beats by Alexander Wilke 4 Stars
September 29, 2004
I used to be a huge Chemical Brothers fan (not since thier foray into the techno scene) and this is classic chemical style. Unlike a few other so called tributes or big beat compilations I think this one actually delivers. While this isn't officially a Chemical Brothers remix album I think it includes a few great remixes of thiers that would be harder to find individually. The non-remix tracks are actually very pleasing as well, including other great big beat acts like Freakniks and Monkey Mafia. "Jailbird" and "Tow Truck" are definitely the highlights of this compilation and represent the Chemical Brothers dynasty at its best. While this is no replacement for the Chemical Brothers' own music it is definitely a good addition to any fan of big beat and funky breaks.

Buy this CD, but don't be stupid by Anthony D Ravenscroft (Santa Fe, NM United States) 5 Stars

I posted an "instead of" link above because you can get the same tracks in the same order for cheaper, like maybe half the price.I don't know whether to say that the Amazon.com entry is STUPID, or MISLEADING. Maybe both. The CD is sure as 7734 **not** "electronica," a label that's even more misapplied than the original (One/Blackheart/Mercury) CD's claim to "UK BIG BEAT."Secondly, to say that this is a Chemical Brothers CD is questionable at best. There is not an original ChemBro track out of the 11. All of six are actually remixes from the Dynamic Duo.I am no big fan of Chemical Brothers. Their work of the past few years has disappointed me. I bought this CD because it was a bargain, & I was in a mood. Since then, I've played it literally a few hundred times.Mostly, the CD is "continuous mix," which is really handy when you're at the console & need to make a phone call or something, or you are just having a house party & want to have a solid beat going for an hour. The real sweet-spots are tracks 3/4 & 7/8, or 1-4 for something longer, & 1-9 can fill up a set nicely with a variety of beats & moods. As much as I like Johnny Rotten, track 10 just doesn't fit on this CD. Sorry. If the Chemical Brothers were to do a few more "party albums" like this one, I'm interested.

Not what I expected 5 Stars

Although this CD isn't strictly speaking Big Beats like it says next to the title (if you want Big Beats, buy one of the Big Beat Boutique CD's, really cool), I was pleasantly surprised by the contents. The store I bought it from had it filed under Trip Hop, and although it is a hard to file CD, I'd recommend it if you like any of the artists listed on the back.

Surrender
by The Chemical Brothers

Surrender kicks off with a nervous, vibrating whine that brings to mind the first three seconds of Hendrix's "Foxy Lady." But it's just a tease; on their third album, techno's Chemical Brothers have all but turned their back on the rock muscle that earned 1997's Dig Your Own Hole gold status in the U.S. Oh, there are guest rock vocalists galore--New Order's Bernard Sumner, Mazzy Star's Hope Sandoval, and Oasis's Noel Gallagher--but only the latter brings out the crunching big beats that the...

We Are the Night

UK reissue of this 2007 album featuring new artwork (replaced because of 'legal reasons'). On We Are The Night, their sixth studio album, Tom Rowlands and Ed Simons demonstrate that when it comes to supreme beat-based innovation, inspired collaborations and sheer sonic excellence, the two are unsurpassable. We Are The Night displays a myriad of sounds, rhythms and emotions along with an astounding roster of featured artists. This griping body of work slips between something simply fun like 'The...

Come with Us

Come with Us
by The Chemical Brothers

Besides Tom Rolands and Ed Simons of the Chemical Brothers, few artists have the clout, chops, and DJ wherewithal to change the landscape of dance music. Still, it's not something the duo seems in a particular hurry to do. Since the release of the now-classic Exit Planet Dust, an intensely groove-able rap-stomp hodgepodge, and Dig Your Own Hole, their 1997 breakout record, big beat has been eating itself in a commercialized frat-boy frenzy. Yet the Brothers haven't found--or even really tried...
