Howell's music as it should be sung by Kariba (Vancouver, BC) 5 Stars
December 16, 2008
While I enjoy the many superb recordings of Howells' music done by professional choirs -- the Finzi Singers and Corydon Singers come to mind -- there is much to be said for hearing it performed by a cathedral choir (or in this case college choir) with boy trebles. St John's choir is in fine form in this recording. The Requiem is one of Howells' most moving pieces, and it is sung beautifully here. Other notable pieces include Like as the Hart and Take Him, Earth, For Cherishing -- commissioned for the memorial service of JFK at the Washington Cathedral. More than 75 minutes of superb music at the Naxos price, make this a double bargain.

Tremendous clarity and musicianship from all concerned. If this Howells is your cup of tea then go to his 'Hymnus Paradisi" which is based on his requiem recorded here. The man's music stirs my soul

Naxos's previous release of the Choir of St John's College, Cambridge, performing works by Herbert Howells was widely recognized as an outstanding bargain, and rightly so. This latest offering from the same choir is no less impressive. The singing is alert, committed, rhythmically incisive, characterful (most of all in that minor masterpiece, Rejoice in the Lamb), with excellent blend and unanimity, clear and colorful vowels (if occasionally a shade exaggerated), and tremendous reserves of...

Walton: Choral Music

Walton: Choral Music
William [composer] Walton (Composer), Christopher Whitton (Composer)

St John's English Choral Music series for Naxos (this Walton disc is No. 4) has won golden opinions (and an award or two), but there has been nothing better than this. With Christopher Robinson nearing the end of his reign in charge of this world-renowned choir, there could hardly be a better testament to his work. The likes of "Drop, drop slow tears" and "Set me as a seal" are standards for choirs up and down the land, but pieces such as the remarkable "The Twelve" and "Where does the uttered...

Howells was one of English music's great "might have beens." He established himself early on in the '20s and '30s, but the death of his only son dealt him a personal blow from which he never fully recovered. The Hymnus Paradisi is Howell's memorial tribute to his child, and it was years before his friends could persuade him to permit the work to be performed. As might well be imagined, it's a masterpiece of the first rank, and a deeply moving experience. Its success encouraged him to continue...
