EDITORIAL REVIEWS

Formed in 1977, these angry, snotty-boy punks came on like an L.A. version of the Sex Pistols: sneering, shouting, and provoking violence wherever they performed. Leader Darby Crash was genuinely threatening as he railed against the society that had spawned him. Unfortunately, Crash's dark and destructive side would eventually consume him. A mere three years after the band's first gig--and in fitting tribute to his hero and role model, Sid Vicious--Crash died of a drug overdose. This anthology documents the Germs' short but furious reign as the kings of L.A. punk sleaze, from their ascension to their eventual decay. It also manages to break through the myths surrounding the band that often overshadow its legitimate contributions to the L.A. hardcore scene. --Mike Corrigan

Pretty dam good by Mutima Hassan 4 Stars

It was nice to hear their actual progression from bad instrument playing to completely awesome. You don't get to hear musicians at their worst and best, presented side by side and I enjoyed that.

Germs - 'MIA: The Complete Anthology' (Rhino) by Mike Reed (USA) 5 Stars

Review #66. With a total of thirty tracks and most of them running the typical two-minute classic punk duration, one would assume this CD is the Germ's entire repertoire but I have it on good authority that it's not. Nonetheless, 'MIA' is still a must-have for any and all true fans of all American punk. Just a few of these tunes I liked best include "Sex Boy", "Circle One", the slap-in-the-face "American Leather", the ten-minute "Shut Down (Annihilation Man)" and "Now I Hear My Laughter". A definite gotta-have.

Simply amazing... by Jack Green (Anysmalltown, State, Country) 5 Stars

This is an amazing collection of all of the Germs' known recordings, from the single "Forming/ Sexboy" to tracks designed for a movie (that only used one). This album is full of raucous energy and nihilistic, confrontational lyrics designed to shock and offend. From the drawn out drone of Forming, to the sing along chorus of What We Do Is Secret, this album practically reverberates with energy. From start to finish, it's a fun ride. It begins with Forming, and ends in full circle with Forming 2, in which Darby Crash namechecks Sid Vicious and Johnny Rotten. One of the best punk albums ever. And yes, this is a real review, not some record store label thing summary they give the album to sell it... I actually talk that way.

LA Hardcore by RubberShoez (Bedford, TX USA) 4 Stars

The Germs recordings are usually very rough, like a lot of hardcore is, but they seem to be exceptionally rough, so be ready for that. Also, you may have to listen to them a few times over before really appreciated their sound. This is very raw, stripped to the bones punk. If you like Flipper, I think you'll enjoy the Germs.

What do you want?...Its the Germs! by Dr. I.C.Brown (H.B., O.C., CA and the World) 5 Stars

Your either a Germs fan or not a Germs fan. I like the Germs and am happy to have only one Germs album..."MIA: The Complete Anthology. The quality is a little rough, but give me a break, it is what it is...get it? What, my favorite songs? Sure, Richie Dagger's Crime, Lexicon Devil, Manimal, and Shut Down. Darby was an interesting character and not the mindless monster he was portrayed as. Don't forget Pat Smear was also in the band...How old is that guy now? I don't want to make claims or tags..."the real punkrock" "How we did it in the old days" "old school punk" blah blah blah....BUT, This is the real deal and the not the radio crap pseudo punk of today, whining and crying about girls or relationships or....WTF. "Kid" panned the Germs in his review and called them "nassally" and I suppose it is a fair opinion, but be smart, throw out the low and the high scores. The Germs (Darby) was a scary, entertaining and dangerous train wreck of a person. Your Grandma loved the Germs.

Fugazi fans already know that this is the original gospel according to Ian MacKaye. This Washington, D.C., quartet hit harder, faster, and franker than just about anybody--and were willing to see through their own bull as quickly as anyone else's. MacKaye manages to be charismatic and confrontational at the same time: tossing brilliant, genuinely funny asides into his serious-as-a- heart-attack lyrics. Meanwhile, the band, led by Lyle Preslar's staggering guitar attack, pushes MacKaye on with...

The Adolescents/Welcome to Reality/All by Myself

The Adolescents/Welcome to Reality/All by Myself
by The Adolescents, Rikk Agnew

Led by Los Angeles punk legend Rikk Agnew, the Adolescents lived up to their name, bawling out song after angst-ridden song about how much everything--mom, dad, the cops, and, most likely, you--totally sucked. Admittedly, that was nothing special for the scene that spawned them, but Agnew's jaw-dropping array of guitar tricks vaulted the Adolescents near to the top of the heap. Equal parts Dick Dale, Johnny Thunders, and Chuck Berry, Agnew didn't flaunt virtuoso moves, but the riffs he laid...
