Queen's American stock may have fallen somewhat in the 1980s. By following singer Freddie Mercury's lead and embracing more club- and cabaret-oriented music, however, the band saw its international appeal explode. During that era, Mercury also launched a promising solo career that produced two wildly disparate albums, a handful of singles, and contributions to other projects that are documented in this three-disc collection. While 1985's "Mr. Bad Guy" finds Mercury's melodramatic vocal flair struggling to overpower his sometimes patchy songwriting and the dated Euro-disco production of Reinhold Mack, the singer rose to the campy heights of "Bohemian Rhapsody"--and then some--on "Barcelona," his grand, neo-operatic collaboration with Spanish diva Montserrat Caballe and one of the most deliriously ambitious pop albums of modern times. Both are available here in sharp, digitally remastered sound. The third bonus disc gives another broad outline of Mercury's talents, from the rare, surprising slightly pre-Queen (1972) Phil Spector tribute single, "I Can Hear Music" through his contributions to Giorgio Moroder's Metropolis soundtrack, Dave Clark's musical theater piece Time, and the singer's delightfully overwrought remake of "The Great Pretender," a song he claimed as autobiography. --Jerry McCulley

I still look forward to listening to this collection every day. Okay, I am addicted such a wonderful feeling. The songs are lively sung the very best musician. This collection forces me to move. Great as a exercise companion. Was hesitant to buy this package because of the Opera; so glad I did. Listening lifts my spirits as nothing else with. Freddie has never put out a bad song or CD and or DVD

A Voice From Heaven by Jean N. Pettit (Lockport, NY) 5 Stars

Wow! I am always amazed (and have been since the early '70's) at the quality and power of Freddy Mercury's incredible voice. Before I listened to Queen music, I did not care for rock. Once I heard the magic of their vocals, and the amazing harmonies that Queen incorporated into their songwriting, I was hooked. They got me interested in classic rock for the first time. I was 13 at the time. While this CD set is not by Queen, per se, it does showcase Freddy Mercury's amazing talents. Pairing him with an opera singer was an original and innovative idea. Any Queen fan would find these CD's enjoyable, if they are open to other forms of music than classic rock. These CD's are meant to be enjoyed from a vocalistic point of view, and there is no greater voice than Freddy Mercury's clear smooth tenor. I believe that opera singers may find this an enjoyable experience as well, and it may help them to understand that many rock singers have operatic talent as well, and are to be equally respected as classical singers are.
