EDITORIAL REVIEWS

In their brief, volatile tenure as a working band--which spawned just two proper albums, Faithless Street (1995) and Strangers Almanac (1997)--Whiskeytown never quite fulfilled their considerable promise. But prior to their ultimate split, the band made a record that was buried for nearly three years by industry snafus. Pneumonia was well worth the wait. The band's final lineup (singer and songwriter Ryan Adams, violinist Caitlin Cary, and guitarist Mike Daly) is augmented by special guests such as Tommy Stinson of the Replacements and James Iha of Smashing Pumpkins. Sure, Adams doesn't quite grasp what he's reaching for on the Latin-tinged "Paper Moon," and "Sit & Listen to the Rain" is about as exciting as its title suggests. But "Jacksonville Skyline," a hometown ode that's sweetly nostalgic but hardly naive, easily ranks among Adams's best ballads. And don't bother trying to elude the hooks of the bouncy kiss-off "Don't Wanna Know Why" or the polished piano pop of "Mirror, Mirror." While it's unfortunate that the reliably unreliable Whiskeytown didn't live to see the release of their most consistent disc, Pneumonia is a harbinger of still better things to come from both Adams and Cary. --Anders Smith-Lindall

A fitting last album. by Kate Stokes (Atlanta, GA) 3 Stars

Whiskeytown created 2 great albums and then issued this mildly good but ultimately mediocre and forgettable one. I'm not sure if this album showed them that it was time to hang it up, or if they already knew it was time to hang it up and this album is a byproduct of those feelings. In any case, this album is not up to par with their first two albums by a long shot and if this were the first album I heard by them I never would have gotten into them. This album plays like the album of a band under contract to make another album but may not have if they were not obligated to do so. This is an album for the diehards only. I have it in my collection because I am a big fan of Ryan Adams and Whiskeytown so I have all their albums by default; this one just sits idly in iTunes and doesn't see regular rotation except the occasional playing to make sure that I still don't care for it very much. I'm just trying to be objective here so I hope I don't get crucified by fellow fans for not giving 4 or 5 stars to every single album associated with Mr. Adams. Again I'm a huge fan but this is not the finest hour of Whiskeytown or Mr. Adams.

Wonderful bedtime music by MRSCRY (New York, NY) 5 Stars

This is definitely my favorite CD to listen to when going to bed, and I mean that in a good way. These songs are so gentle, and it's hard to believe Ryan Adams was like, what, 24 when he put this album out?

This is an incredible CD. I have worn out one copy and purchased this as a second. Ryan Adams once again proves his talents as a musician.

kids, you fence-sitting 4-4.5 stars types................are YOU MAD? this recording is brilliant. errrr, ummm.....have you heard THE JAYHAWKS, Rainy Day Music??? well, this recording is up there with those guys. see, the problem with people to spend more than 5 mins writing a review is that!!!! they have more than 5 mins to waste - ie: not constructive creating their own wonders. Whiskeytown, this is the record I play my wife. this is love!!!

Consistently excellent by Nikola Tesla (San Diego, CA USA) 5 Stars

I am taking the time to write this review for two reasons: 1) I must disagree with the Amazon reviewer who said that "Sit & Listen to the Rain" is unexciting. It's a great song. Though artist comparisons are almost always bunk, this song makes me think of Kurt Cobain and what he might have done. Anyway, a very good song IMHO. 2) I own six Ryan Adams albums (Whiskeytown, The Cardinals, and Solo) and this is my favorite. 11 out of 14 tracks are great, and the other three ain't bad. My opinion of course, but I say buy this album without hesitation.

Faithless Street

Faithless Street
by Whiskeytown

Here is how the first album from this alt-country-flavored Raleigh, North Carolina, band was always supposed to sound. When Faithless Street was released on the indie Mood Food label, it suffered from an inferior mix and other enforced choices that frontman Ryan Adams and producers Chris Stamey and Tim Harper have successfully corrected. The result is restored and remastered versions of the original songs where the shining country soul, romantic heart, and rebel spirit of Adams's songwriting...

Strangers Almanac

Strangers Almanac
by Whiskeytown

Strangers Almanac first grabs you because it sounds so great. It's filled with dynamic performances that smolder moodily, then flare quickly into firestorms of twangy and soulful guitar rock that fuse Uncle Tupelo with the Stones, the Replacements, with Gram Parsons. But what makes this album essential are the songs of frontman Ryan Adams. Take "Houses On The Hill," about a man merely going through a box of old letters: in just two verses, and to a melody that's the definition of bittersweet,...

Strangers Almanac

Strangers Almanac
by Whiskeytown

STRANGERS ALMANAC was Whiskeytown's penultimate album. The band is still steeped in the sounds of country and Gram Parsons-inspired country-rock here, but one can hear the music moving toward the pop of their final effort PNEUMONIA. Everything still centers around the voice and excellent songwriting of Ryan Adams (who was still only 22 at the time of this album's release).

The song "16 Days," for example, with its breezy, open-road, country vibe and the lovely interlocking harmonies between...
