| modern society: so technological by Bruce P. Barten (Saint Paul, MN United States) 5 Stars June 29, 2009 This CD is so astute in reflecting the kind of changes that people are expected to adjust to that it took me many years to realize that Warren Zevon was telling me things better than anyone else could. I did not think the music was what made me like songs like "Trouble Waiting to Happen," but the music is good enough to make me feel like I woke up this morning and I fell out of bed if anyone asks about me. It takes talent to get things stuck in my mind like Sentimental Hygiene, which was not a way that people I knew thought about relationships. When I was going to church in Minneapolis, bringing up Sentimental Hygiene's line about driving up and down the boulevard was something which made people think I was crazier than they were. It took a shrink to convince me that, sure enough, sentimental hygiene was a major reason those people wanted me to get fixed.
| | Sentimental, for sure by J. Borja (Santa Monica) 5 Stars May 18, 2009 Working on a Warren Zevon session was not as crazy as one might think. I was doing overdubs on a project that would later become Warren Zevon's Sentimental Hygiene. Niko Bolas was the main engineer on the session and I was a big fan of his work. I did simple overdubs on the sessions and yet those days were magic for me. Reconsider Me, was the one song that has stayed with me and perhaps always as a profound musical piece of the soul. This record will be the only time (as brief as it was) I've gotten close enough to Warren to shake his hand and smile to the music he created that day in the studio. I am a Warren Zevon fan and will always be.
| | Warren Zevon Gets Sober For The Second Time, And Comes Back Swinging With A New Album by The Footpath Cowboy (Kingston, NY United States) 5 Stars January 19, 2008 Around 1980, Warren Zevon had gotten clean and sober following a bout with alcoholism, resulting in three great albums- BAD LUCK STREAK IN DANCING SCHOOL, the live STAND IN THE FIRE, and THE ENVOY, after which, following the use of wine for a ritual purpose (he was Jewish), he fell off the wagon again and was not heard from for five years. By 1987, he'd regained his sobriety, and came back swinging with SENTIMENTAL HYGIENE, arguably his best since STAND IN THE FIRE. Although he still has a wicked sense of humor ("Detox Mansion" satirizes the experience of being in rehab, whereas "Even A Dog Can Shake Hands" serves as a sarcastic warning for me that staying away from toxic people will help me look good for several pretty actresses), it's tempered by thoughtful examinations of what he learned while getting sober, which make this CD, with its remastered sound, cut deeper emotionally than some of his early work. This album is essential listening for anyone struggling with ANY type of addiction; in fact, even a horse-lover who compulsively gambles every last penny at the races can learn from this CD.
| | Sentimental for Zevon by Hank (United States) 5 Stars April 28, 2007 This is another great Zevon album. I had the LP and just bought the remastered version on CD. Maybe it's just me but the title track Sentimental Hygiene, well I just can't get it out of my head since the first time I heard it years ago. Check it out dog..5 stars! It's worth the price of the CD just to crank it up and rock out to it.
| | My Favorite WZ Studio Album by J. Blilie (Twin Cities, MN) 5 Stars November 10, 2006 In my opinion, this is Warren's best studio album (my favorite album is "Stand in the Fire".) (I AM a rabid Zevon Fan.) Every song on this record is strong. There's variety; but all rock. I really like the wit of the lyrics (I DO like detox mansion! "I was rakin' leaves with Liza ... Now I'm doin' my own laundry and I'm GETING THOSE CLOTHES CLEAN!") I was so pleased with this comeback album. It was his high-water mark and he never again approached it, though I like "Transverse City," "Mt Ride's Here," and "Life'll Kill Ya." The only of his other albums that I compare with this one is Excitable Boy.
Great rocking record. Enjoy.

| The Envoy by Warren Zevon
THE ENVOY, the reflective 1982 masterpiece that Zevon once described as "The Excitable Boy Grows Up," makes its CD debut with this release. Highlights include the title track, the moving "Never Too Late For Love," "The Hula Hula Boys," and "The Overdraft," a co-write with novelist Thomas McGuane featuring a ripping Lindsey Buckingham solo. Four previously unreleased tracks include outtakes of "Word Of Mouth" and "Wild Thing," and the romantically skewed gem "Let Nothing Come Between You."...
