Cavity - 'Supercollider' (Hydrahead) by Mike Reed (USA) 3 Stars
August 21, 2008
From what I've heard by this Florida based sludge metal band, they're pretty much like a Pantera wanna be. That's not altogether a bad thing. 'Supercollider' isn't a bad disc - just nothing special. Decent tunes are the title track "Supercollider", the face-bashing "Taint And Abandon" and "Black Snake". Line-up: Anthony Vialon-guitar & vocals, Daniel Gorostiaga-bass, Ryan Weinstein-guitar and Henry Wilson-drums. Might do something for fans and followers of Crowbar, Goatwhore and Down.

If you're a fan of the "Somewhere Between the Train Station and the Dumping Grounds" Cavity, the "On the Lam" Cavity, or even the "Laid Insignificant" Cavity, you may not find much to love here. the beloved Cavity vocalist, Rene Barge, who generally sounds as if he's rolling around in a mud puddle filled with broken glass, is sadly absent on this release. You'd think the music would be more or less the same, even without the trademark vocalist, but Rene's absence takes a huge amount of energy away from this album. It's a decent stone-metal album, but the lyrics are awful and the vocals are certainly lacking. Hopefully the recent release of "Laid Insignificant" will draw some more attention to this amazing act.

Supercollider is probably one of the best albums I've ever purchased from the cut-out bin. Sorry, sparky. Supercollider is Superlame. Stoner Doom for fans of horrible music. Get Ashlee Simpson instead.
