Album Description
Atmosphere is the biggest selling group in the underground rap scene with their cerebral yet down-to-earth sound. Other artists in this genre include Sage Francis, Aesop Rock, Living Legends, El-P, Mr. Lif, Busdriver and Aceyalone. 19 tracks. Parental Advisory/Explicit Content. Epitaph. 2003.

As point man for the Minneapolis-based Rhymesayers crew, Atmosphere MC Slug put heartland hip-hop on the map. Likewise, he's always written from the heart, and Seven's Travels--the fourth Atmosphere full-length, and first released under a licensing agreement with the venerable punk imprint Epitaph--finds that agenda unchanged. Though familiar antagonist Lucy Ford appears only once, these tracks are packed with passionate meditations on typical topics, pitting confidence against recrimination, parenthood against partying, joy against anger, love against sex. And while Slug spills his guts in the spotlight, the stage isn't his alone; from the neck-snapping beats of "Trying to Find A Balance" to the cartoonish suspense theme of "Gotta Lotta Walls" and the naked acoustic guitar behind "Always Coming Back Home to You," Seven's Travels features some of Ant's most adventurous and assured production, plus contributions from Mr. Dibbs and Brother Ali, whose scorched-earth verses drive "Cats Van Bags." --Anders Smith Lindall

Definitive Faux-Hip-Hop by Alex Goldberg (Brooklyn, NY) 1 Stars

Essentially, this is "Hip-Hop" for people who normally would never listen to Hip-Hop. This is the kind of album, which as a hip-hop fan, is recommended to you by your friend who normally listens to fall out boy because he knows you're into hip-hop. This is a very feminine, wannabe-poetic attempt at "intelligent rap". The lyrics are mostly Slug's complaints about girls. The beats can be almost decent on some songs, but are generally diluted by some kinda of "artsy" elements. If you want hip-hop that isn't about money and violence, please don't think this junk is your only option. Atmosphere and the whole rhymesayer's posse are making underground hip-hop look bad. Yes, I said it.

National Disgrace was the video that I fell in love with. I happened to see Atmosphere on a sampler DVD released from Epitaph records. I'm into the type of bands that are on Epitaph and generally don't listen to any hip hop at all. But I was so mezmerized by Slug's voice and the music video, that I had to buy their album. Currently, I have 6 of their albums and they're all amazing. The lyrics are my main reason for loving Atmosphere. The words actually mean something, rare with a lot of rap/ hip hop artists. But Atmosphere has something special, and I'm glad I found them.

This was my first Atmosphere album. I stumbled upon it while at Best Buy looking for CDs. I saw it everytime I went. I said, "Fine, I'll take a chance on you". "You better be worth it". And.. it was. As I sat there on my couch listening to it.. I thought.. Damn.. He's (They are) pretty good. Been hooked since. I own them all now. If you want to listen to real Hip Hop that doesn't involve guns, rims, boasting & crack.. then this is a great album for you. Nothing flashy, just his outlook on life. Try something different.. you'll like it.

Atmosphere's fifth album (not including rapper Slug's numerous side projects) isn't quite as consistent as previous CDs like 2003's Seven's Travels or Lucy Ford, but it's hardly lagging far behind. For all the attention Slug gets as a rapper--deservedly so, given that he, along with Aesop Rock, is a smarter, less pissy Eminem--producer ANT is as vital to this pairing as anyone, lacing the album with everything from the hard knock beats of "The Arrival" to the gospel-influenced charm of "Get...
