Particle - Electronic, Psych, Progressive Rock by Steven Sly (Kalamazoo, MI United States) 4 Stars

I am not sure how exactly I would categorize Particle. The band appeals to the techno electronica end of the music spectrum, but they also incorporate a healthy dose of progressive rock as well. I would think that they would appeal to a broad spectrum of listeners including fans of older bands like Ozric Tentacles, Hawkwind, or even The Alan Parsons Project. They also have a jam band element to them not totally unlike Umphrey's McGee. This is a very good album of all instrumental music. The musicianship is very good with lots of tasty guitar, keys and drum work to go along with the electronic bubbles and pops. I first discovered them when listening to the internet progressive rock radio show Galiarchives and was really impressed by what I heard. I don't know much more about them and have not had the chance to see them live, but if you are into electronic, psych, space, progressive rock this album is certainly worth a look.

A decent jab into electronica fusion by Billy Stagg 3 Stars

While this band does hold some solid grooves, I do not recognize anything groundbreaking. Particle doesn't make any fresh attempts at this recent, contemporary genre of Techno/Jam. While Particle may give you a fun night of dancing at a live performance, don't anticipate a carthartic experience by listening to this average recording.

WOW!! ELECTROFUNK! by K. Rollberg (wyoming) 5 Stars

ever since the first listen i was hooked on this album. a lot of the electronic stuff i usually don't like so much, but this album has so much funk going on it's amazing. non stop dance fest! no vocals (definitely a plus), and jams that always make you want to move. for the most part the songs flow out of one and into another so you barely notice individual tracks. there are a few exceptions on the album but not many. these guys start grooving, and finally kick it into gear with awesome peaks. i've probably listened to this album 100 times by now, but i'm still not even close to being done with it. CHECK IT OUT!!! these guys have awesome shows too, they last forever and have a ton of energy.

Lastnite we saw one of the finest musical act I've seen in years! The Particle People are very accomplished musicians. My friend a I stayed for the entire performance. We only walked a few feet for a round of beers, once. Pink Floyd, Robin Trower, JIMI, blues, jazz, rock...all of it! Tight seems just a word. We couldn't believe the ENERGY, the DRIVIN' character, the magnetism to listen! Yes, my trumpet playing buddy agreed, a horn section would be a nice addition. We're both in our early fifties, and I think we were having more fun than the younger crowd, in general. We grew up in such a great musical time, ie the '60's and '70's; and this group, shurely brings back alot of really great memories! Rock On Particle!

An aural tonic by loce_the_wizard (Lilburn, GA USA) 3 Stars

I purchased "Launchpad" on a whim, curious about what constitutes "funktronic" rock. I have a somewhat better idea now, and would have to say it's a bit better than I thought. Particle, a quartet, relies heavily on guitar and keyboards to make its case, and sometimes quite convincingly. When they click into a groove, the band cooks along quite nicely, more like a new age funk fest than say something by Hawkwind. The tracks Sun Mar 11, Roads A Breeze, and title cut Launchpad sound like they might have been good fits for the Matrix movies. The Banker skirts around some of the same territory as E.S.T. or the Gregory James Band except with guitars out front instead of keyboards. But sometime the synthesizers and drum-based induced sense of urgency (think King Crimson colliding with Alan Parson's Project and with Hawkwind) become a bit too much for the frontal lobes, fraying ones nerves and tracks such as The Elevator may generate a mild headache. The key, for me, is to listen to "Launchpad" in small doses, for it offers an aural tonic even if it does not sustain as a main course. Those who really like this CD might want to check out the more complex work of Land on the CD "Road Movies."
