Like Shots To The Head by C. Thomas (HOUSTON, TX) 5 Stars
June 17, 2009
I'm from Houston, TX so of course I was pretty late on the Headshots but I finally got ahold of the complete Headshots series from 1994 to 1998, so I understood the history and legend behind the Minneapolis Headshots collective. Headshots had some of the illest and most original rhymes & beats I've ever heard & believe me I've heard a LOT of different styles. They easily rivaled Freestyle Fellowship, Wu Tang & Hieroglyphics, it's just a shame that more than half the emcees they started with are no longer producing consistent material. Slug has always been a captivating MC to me because of how personal he gets. I can recall one opener he spit on Headshots Vol. 6: Industrial Warfare, "Once upon a time there was a hip hop jam, I arrived a little late, cuz that's how I am. I was like damn, there's a cool amount of heads in this room, so I took my spot, stood & watched, so I could consume" - It's like movie narration, then immediately following that he rips the beat a new a**hole. Headshots: Se7en came after Industrial Warfare and it's all Slug from start to finish. This was actually the last album I heard Slug with this particular style since after this he relaxed his delivery & switched to a lighter tone. But Slug covers it all on this one, and in fine detail I might add. Showing that there's no lying in hip hop when true feelings are spoken, but don't think for a second Slug's some soft emo kid cuz he'll tear any rapper today to shreds just as quick as that assumption strikes you and this album really proves that. Headshots: Se7en is better than Overcast to me cause it showcases a little more variety in the track topics. I say buy this & search the net for the rest of the Headshots series, you'll be blown away at the sound of some real lyricists. - Chris Blaq

5 stars for the bonus disc!  by Alex Goldberg (Brooklyn, NY) 3 Stars

Forget the actual CD. It's a touch better than Slug's newer releases, but it's basically his typical slightly girly type of rapping with half decent beats. BUT, the bonus CD you get with this features some early matieral from slug, musab and others which is extremely good. The bonus disc has some very raw beats and aggresive rhyming which sounds like it could have been an east coast album. (I can't believe I'm saying something positive about Slug) I don't know what happened to slug, but I can tell you that he USED to be a good rapper. I suppose the whole backpack movement diluted his character. Like I said, the 2nd disc is nothing like new atmosphere, it's real hip-hop. Believe it or not!

Good album, better additional disc. by Sam Howard (Minneapolis, MN USA) 5 Stars

This is an excellent album. Atmosphere that was pre-Overcast is my favorite kind! However the best part of the CD isn't the CD itself, but the bonus disc that features the Headsho7s' Greatest Hits. I'm not even going to review the main disc, it's pretty good, however I think that should be the bonus disc and the second disc should be the main attraction. The second disc contains tracks from The Dynospectrum, Slug, Sess, Beyond, and a few other under the rock RhymeSayers. Every track on the CD is great, which is pretty much hit or miss considering there's only ten. Some of the highlights of the bonus disc are "7th St. Entry" a song about someone who leaves messages in the 7th St. Entry bathroom that are duragatory to Slug and his abilities. The next great track is the best on the CD: "Multiples Reprise [Remix]" this CD blows the other Multiple tracks you may have heard out of the water. The story is all about the many characters of Uptown Minneapolis, and their expolits. It goes into the tales of over ten people and how they all intertwine, and the downfall of each. Track 06 "Funny Colors In My Mushroom Trails" is about Slug and Sess's experiences with Mushrooms. It is hauntingly accurate and will make any shroom user think back and wonder what the eff they were doing. "F**k The Bulls**t" is another awesome track, about people who complain about life when they could very easily fix things themselves with suicide (EXTREME!). The next two tracks are also very good, but like I said no song compares to "Multiples Reprise [Remix]." Without a doubt pick up the set. If you are a fan of Atmosphere's Overcast! you will definetly appreciate the first disc. And if you are a fan of hip-hop in general you will love the second disc. Thank you much.

Atmosphere's fifth album (not including rapper Slug's numerous side projects) isn't quite as consistent as previous CDs like 2003's Seven's Travels or Lucy Ford, but it's hardly lagging far behind. For all the attention Slug gets as a rapper--deservedly so, given that he, along with Aesop Rock, is a smarter, less pissy Eminem--producer ANT is as vital to this pairing as anyone, lacing the album with everything from the hard knock beats of "The Arrival" to the gospel-influenced charm of "Get...
