EDITORIAL REVIEWS

Despite sharing a weakness for sweeping, bittersweet guitar rock with Coldplay, Long-view is not just another smudged Xerox of the original. Mercury finds the British group not only grasping for its own identity but other, more elusive things. Melodies unravel slowly, each note of every song aims to pull at the heartstrings, and the lyrics seem to indicate that singer Rob McVey spends just about every night flopping around his bed mulling all kinds of existential conundrums. But redemption is always around the corner in storming tunes like "Further" and "Will You Wait Here." And at least they don't sound like Travis--much. So a work in progress, to be sure, but the end result could be something quite fetish-worthy. --Aidin Vaziri

Thank God for internet radio!! by Kerri J. Anderson (Rhode Island) 5 Stars

If I remember correctly I was listening to my Band of Horses station on Pandora; heard a track by Long-View; and was instantly hooked! What I usually do when that happens is go to Amazon and look for reviews on the band and then buy the cd...so glad I purchased Mercury!!! Listened to it in it's entirety at the gym and loved every single track...how often does that happen? I am a huge fan of the Shoegaze scene and this band has just enough of that element to make me want to sway back and forth and stare at my shoes...I must admit, some of the songs teeter on the corny side (I suppose that's the Pop influence)and I can definitely see them on an OC or One Tree Hill soundtrack, but the songs have just enough droning guitar or catchy hook to suck me in. I realize that Mercury is not a new cd but it's new to me and one of my favorites right now :-)

Pretty much if you like coldplay, starsailor, and athlete you will love this cd. Great lyrics, great drummer, great vocals. This band should be bigger.

Fantastic sound, even better lyrics! by Eric Bartlett (Helotes, Texas United States) 5 Stars

You know how you go to the I-tunes store and off to the right of songs that you are listening to, there is the Genius feature that lists other songs that may sound comparable? Well I tried a few samples of these guys work, and you know what? It's good, no not just good, this is fantastic stuff. I highly recommend it if you like some of the other stuff I have reviewed here, check it out, you will not be dissapointed.

Excellent Snow Patrol-like group by Darth Wader (Aylett, VA) 4 Stars

I bought a used copy of this album off of SecondSpin for less than $3.00 and I am enjoying it very much. This CD has that lush UK/Brit-Rock style. It is very melodic and reminded me of Snow Patrol at times. Pay no attention to Amazon listing them as a country and bluegrass band (as Longview is also the name of a bluegrass band). These are catchy, sweeping songs in the vein of Snow Patrol, Coldplay, and Travis. This CD came out in 2003, so I assume at some point they will release another CD!

Breezy, sorta like Radiohead or My Bloody Valentine by M. Murphy (Seattle, WA) 5 Stars

I first heard this band off a Urlich Schnauss album where he had re-mixed one of their songs. They're great. It's traditional layered guitars without too much synth pop. If you like the so-called "new" stripped down, "retro" 70s stuff, you probably won't like Long-View. If you like Jarvis Cocker, Coldplay or Radiohead, I think you will.

Heroes and Villains
by Paloalto

Floating in on the last wings of Britpop, this Southern California band named after a Northern California college town (or singer James Grundler's nursery school, depending on who you ask) is out of time and out of step. Yet, they create some of the dreamiest pop to emerge on the U.S. side of the pond in recent years. Winsome, anguished, and brainy, paloalto conjures up the spirit of both Pink Floyd and Radiohead in their introspective epics of triumph and self-determination. Gorgeous, buzzing...

The Shore is a richly talented young quartet whose seamless ensemble sound welds a mix of influences, from Neil Young to Coldplay to the Verve to Britrock.Bringing it all together in a grand musical vision reminiscent of the best that rock can be while remaining utterly innovative and original, the L.A.band's self-titled debut album, produced by Rick Parker (Joe Firstman, Miranda Lee Richards ), claims a beachhead for The Shore.

Hailing from Los Angeles the four piece, have created an album that is as rich as it is beautiful, packed full of slow burning melodies & soul-inspiring songs. Tapping into the same vein as Mercury Rev, Grandaddy, Coldplay & Doves whilst drawing inspiration from Neil Young, John Lennon & Brian Wilson, they present a glorious vision of West Coast pop that deals as much with gentle melancholy as wide-eyed wonder.
