| Better impossible by Omar M. Castellon 5 Stars May 23, 2007 Anggun finally reaches her perfect path with her album Luminiscence after playing around with different rythms like electropop (Chrysallis) and New Age (Snow on the Sahara). Luminiscence is the purest expression of what Anggun is and what she is made of: passion and tenderness. This album is definitely her best work ever. The most amazing tracks are the vibrant "Saviour" and hip-hop-ish "In your mind" which contains Arab sounds. "Human" makes you go back to the 70's while "Cover" made me cry several times reminding me of my homeland. There's no doubt that this album was conceived to seal Anggun's career with a golden mark, and she absolutely did it again.
But she also goes back in time to the beginnings of her career when she used to be a rock star with songs like "Devil in my Mind","Painted" and "Captivity". On the other hand, she makes us long for the lost love with songs like "Surrender" and "Breathe in Water",a powerful ballad which is perhaps the best song of the entire album.
If you're a fan of Anggun, you must have this album, if you're not, you'll become one after listening to it.
| | Her best Album So Far - Lyrics and Music by Idho Nahdi 5 Stars March 12, 2007 Again, she made another beautiful album. But this one, shows her maturity in making songs. 'Breath in water' captured my attention ... she sang beautifully, and the rest are great songs and music. Looking forward to her next album!
| | beautifully haunting by Brent Searls (Portland, OR) 5 Stars March 08, 2007 As always, her voice is beautifully haunting. Her transition from French to English is unbelievably smooth, even if there is not a word for word translation. I know almost no French, but both versions of her albums are a must for any Anggun fan. Luminescence (French or English) are her best to date.
| | Her Best So Far by Fred McGhee (Austin, TX) 4 Stars December 04, 2006 In terms of organization, visualization, and execution, there can be no doubt that this is Anggun's best album thus far. That applies to both the English and French versions. One important factor about this effort is that it is also the best produced of her albums; one can sense that a variety of factors (not the least of which being the fact that she is simply older and wiser) are responsible for the greater focus.
At the end of the day it is still about the songs. This record has a fine mix of compositions: there's the dancefloor dominator ("In Your Mind"/"Juste ĂȘtre une femme,") the French influenced pop/rock ("Evil And Angel"/"Je suis libre") that just enough avoids sounding too much like the ubiquitous Jean-Jacques Goldman, heartfelt spiritual love songs ("Surrender"/"Sur les cendres") and my personal favorites, the rock/pop songs ("Painted," "Devil in My Mind," and "Human"). I like it when Anggun rocks out; she has a unique sassy capacity to sing with (and of) rebellion while still sounding classy and...well...French.
Anggun's voice, her strongest attribute, is also excellent here. Kudos to the production team for making sure this happened. Her lyrics, both in English and French, are also better, tighter, and in many cases profound and personal. "Surrender" is a truly captivating and moving song of love and spiritual release.
Overall a top-notch and professionally executed effort that pays attention to detail and makes sure that Anggun comes off looking as good as she deserves.
Hint, Hint....South by Southwest awaits....!
| | A Different Look For Anggun by Pacificrye (Dallas, TX USA) 3 Stars November 05, 2006 I first got hooked on Anggun when I listened to her 'Secret of the Sea' on her album 'Snow on the Sahara'. I didn't even know who she was. But her voice was strong and unique and her lyrics were just beautiful. I purchased her CD and absolutely fell in love with it. It was peaceful and earthy yet profound...for me atleast. 'Luminescence' is...a bit different. It's a bit edgier and has a pop feel to it. The opening 'In Your Mind' is a nice song to dance to. I like the beat. My second favorite is 'Evil & Angel'. Love the guitar, love the lyrics. She's showing versatility, which is indicative of one's level of talent. I get the sense that she's still experimenting, and the product of that is great. I firmly believe Anggun will continue to demonstrate her innate talent, and thus there will be no hesitation on my part to spend my green on her future releases.
